Alaska's schools aren't failing, they are starving for adequate resources.

Hey Tregarrick: the Alaska Reads Act doesn't game test scores by mandating retention when a kid can't read. Instead IT MANDATES STUDENT SUPPORTS for struggling readers. Interventions work. Retention is inconclusive and can cause lasting harm. What does the bill actually need: FULL FUNDING

This year @alaskascott.bsky.social introduced the Alaska Freedom to Read Act. I hope he reintroduces it next year.

I am also curious. Is UA gonna stop overloading newly minted professors with so many 20+ student classes while also requiring they write grants to sustain their research so they can stop relying on AI to grade or is this just a one sided thing?

Someone who taught me so much died last year. Today I was listening to a panel discuss how to navigate social media and children's mental health and I looked down at this bag and thought of her. Loss doesn't have a timeline. Take care of yourself folks.

Let us know if you need an intervener. I board by fax oh so many years ago. It is uber convenient when it works.

What's the name of a teacher 📚 🎓 ✏️ who deeply influenced the person you are today? I'll go first: André - my jr/sr high math teacher. He knew we could do great things, so he just kept expecting us to do them. I was in college algebra in 11th grade earning credits before I even knew what hit me!

I needed to recharge. So I'm here with my niece & nephew. Being an elected official is challenging, and I am here for it because kids like my sister's and her wife's deserve a better America. Rest is resistance. Recharge. Connect. Love. You'll be happier and do better, I promise.

I also wonder what the trained law enforcement officers and the district lawyers think of unidentified civilians being authorized to carry out lethal force on children.

The poll workers at Fairview Rec Center have been doing this for years! (Ask me, I know!). In Nome, the poll workers used to ask me the most personal of questions on why I broke up with whom because SMALL TOWN GOSSIP.

Look, intellectually I understand there are situations that call for unsalted butter instead of salted butter, but emotionally there is never a time I want to be in one of those situations.

The former AG whose job it was to protect Alaska's fish and navigate the complicated waters between sport, comm, and subsistence interests and federal/state laws of co-management doesn't know jack about fish you say? Shocking...probably should have spent less time creating backdoor school vouchers.

No one tells you that your personal life will cease to exist. That national holidays, religious observances, and birthdays will be sacrificed for work. Some say it is part time and others demand you do it all for free. I love the work and I thank everyday my spouse chooses this sacrifice with me.

It is debilitating to think about how Alaska received this increase in oil revenue.

070

Löki Gale Tobin @lgtobin.bsky.social · 01/09/2026

The Dept of Revenue has affirmed the state received enough oil revenue to pay in full the one-time distribution of $115 million to Alaska's public schools And starting in FY28, the state will pay for our schools energy costs. That's what coalition leadership looks like. #akleg

@mariancall.bsky.social the full circle is Greg was a photo judge for the fair and he and Julie would also play music there each year. Everytime I see his bird photo from Kotz in the Rasmuson Foundation small conference room - which was succession into the art bank - I think of his love for art.

The Task Force on Education Funding has wrapped up its school site visits. The draft report will be out soon. Our last visit was magical and my deepest gratitude to the families, teachers, administrators who make LKSD hum... Still I am contractually obligated to say: Go Nanooks!

This week the Task Force on Education Funding visited LKSD school sites. Beyond the deep and overwhelming feeling of homesickness I felt on that first whiff of tundra tea, it has been an informative opportunity for myself and many of my colleagues (we brought Rs and Ds). Thank you Alaska.

Wish me luck. Tomorrow I wake at 6 to bake my sourdough loaf after its 16 hours of cold proofing. I have timed it to arrive at the AK State Fair in Palmer with about an hour left of resting before peak deliciousness. I am going for a blue ribbon, but will settle for Honorable Mention.

❤️ I think about the time I first met you - during one of the several "last" in-person eulogy/birthday parties Greg Gusse held. Losing a parent - step parent / bio / in-law/ chosen - reminds us that the time we have together is finite. Make music I think. It is truly soul healing.

Oh I have receipts. Anyone who says we are better off today than under Biden is independently wealthy and probably has a wife who was nominated to be the U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica. Everybody else is struggling and is secretly worrying their kids won't experience Christmas this year.

$40 trillion in debt...up from $20 trillion from when Trump first assumed office. That represents over 30% of the world's GDP by the way. And what do we have to show for it??? $21.46 a gal in Shugnak. Lew tells me it is $7.46 in Nome...
