Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 07/10/2026It is as if we are outlawing rescuing immobilized people from a burning building, because the house never ought to have caught fire. It is grotesque, it re-victimizes vulnerable people, and it is below our dignity as a country. 000
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 07/10/2026And whether there are realistic alternatives is one of the things that is legitimately considered in determining capacity. 100
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Now, is the suffering of people with mental illness often preventable and possible to mitigate with better supports and treatment. Absofuckinlutely it is. But it is no answer to "we have placed them in a world of suffering" to refuse to let them out. 100
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 07/10/2026And this does not stop people with mental illness from killing themselves. It merely prevents anyone from helping them when it is a reasonable course of action they have the capacity to adopt. The people "helped" will either suffer needlessly in life, or in death. That's the net result. 100
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 07/10/2026There is, I promise you, NO WORLD in which a psychiatrist would assess a person to have capacity for MAID where that person has a disease where that person is at risk of acting on pathological suicidal ideation. Regretfully, they do not give people that degree of respect. 100
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 07/10/2026And the hearings are usually in front of other psychiatrists who are making the same mistake. That being the case, what does it mean, right now, if a doctor says a person with mental illness has capacity to accept MAID? IT MEANS MAID IS WHAT THE DOCTOR WOULD DO. 100
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 07/10/2026If you ask the average psychiatrist "does this person have capacity" the primary factor the doctors use to decide is whether they and the patient agree. I've been in hundreds of hearings where psychiatrists could point to no other sign of incapacity than disagreement and diagnosis, neither relevant 100
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 07/10/2026The Canadian government has announced its intention to mandate that exact mistake with regard to MAID. The MAID system already requires that the doctors are satisfied the patient has capacity to make the decision. And let me tell you something about how doctors do that. Because it isn't good. 100
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I used to work representing people suffering from mental illness, and the biggest injustice our legal system commits against them is to conflate mental illness with a lack of capacity. They are different things. You remove rights for a lack of capacity, not for mental illness. 100

Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Eventually, yes. But I need to understand it, first. 😅 Most features of §Blawx are a user-friendly version of something you can already do in code. This is entirely novel. It will be a while before I understand what it is for, and how best to use it. But it existing sure helps with finding out. 😉 010

Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Thanks to my former colleague Andreas Källberg who drew my attention to the fact that s(CASP) answers were a form of partial evaluation in early 2021. And to @mattwadd.bsky.social whose unwavering appreciation for propositional logic flowcharts was the inspiration for what to do with that fact. 111
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 29/09/2026So this is not a way of visualizing the rules. The rules are way too complicated to be visualized this way. It is a way of visualizing a set of answers to a question. This way a human validating the outputs doesn't need to look at 16 justifications, they can look at one flowchart with 4 buttons! 110
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 29/09/2026The flowchart is a "partial evaluation" of the §Blawx rules into a new program that is a) possible to visualize as a flowchart, b) can only answer that specific question in the context of those specific facts and the original rules, and c) can still answer it all the ways §Blawx could. 110
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 29/09/2026You may think "oh, cool, the §Blawx rules are converted into a flowchart". No. The §Blawx rules were used to run a question like "when is bob protected or not protected by this rule?" There are two answers (protected/not), and different explanations that depend on different fact scenarios for each. 110
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 29/09/2026§Blawx generates multiple answers, and multiple explanations for each answer, each as a constrained tree justification. What if it was possible to take a bunch of those trees and combine them into a ternary flowchart diagram to allow you to explore them interactively? #RulesAsCode #LegalTech 121
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 26/09/2026This past week I made 13 changes to the deployed version of §Blawx, and it took about 5 hours of my time, almost none of which was spent in an IDE. For comparison, my average in the busy part of 2025 was 0.6 changes per week. This is differnt, folx. #HarnessEngineering 000

Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 19/09/2026Yes. People seem to think that because it should be hard in terms of approval thresholds to change constitutions that it should also be hard procedurally. I think it should be closer to mandatory procedurally. Getting very high levels of agreement on even excellent ideas requires an ongoing debate. 000

Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 06/09/2026So Trump confuses "exchange rate" with "trade imbalance" because he's losing his mind, and all of our news outlets are reacting with credulity that he wants to do something about the USD/CAD exchange rate, so our news is also utterly detached from reality. Do better, journalists. 010

Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 30/08/2026There are plenty of reasons to boycott Google anyway, so no arguments there. Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 16/08/2026It maintains the reliability of Canada as a negotiating partner, puts the onus to solve the problem on the US, supports unity among the confederation. Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 16/08/2026Think of the provincial alcohol bans as a boycott, not a trade policy. If you make yourself less hated by the provinces, you might get them reversed by a good trade deal. But we will not promise what it would require us to violate provincial sovereignty to do. 2/ 100
Jason Morris @lexpedite.bsky.social · 16/08/2026It feels to me that the only coherent position for the government of Canada to take with regard to alcohol sales is to say "the Provincial governments do not negotiate international trade agreements, we do.
