UPDATE: Police have recovered a firearm during searches of the Roseburn path in Edinburgh, they say it’s part of Operation Portaledge, the ongoing investigation into gang related violence across Scotland’s central belt.

New: Confirmed dates for strike action at the University of Edinburgh. UCU members will take industrial action on Friday June 20th - a University open day. Then a further five days during ‘welcome week’. It’s in response to planned £140 Million cuts at the institute.

NEW: The UCU has voted “overwhelmingly” in support of industrial action at the University of Edinburgh. It’s over planned budget cuts to the value of £140 Million, and refusal to rule out compulsory redundancies. 84% in favour of strike action, with a 60% turnout.

8-year-old Sam has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy - a genetic muscle wasting disease. A new treatment is coming but with it yet to be approved for NHS use time is muscle. His parents hope it'll be available to Sam soon. More on tonight's STV News at Six.

I spoke with UCU Edinburgh President Sophia Woodman earlier. She told me they think the universities finances are “quite healthy” compared to the sector with “enormous reserves”. And that they have “adequate resources to cover a downturn without cutting staff.”

NEW: The University of Edinburgh says it needs to close a financial gap of 10% of its turnover (£140 Million) in the next 18 months. “Radical action” will mean a lower staff base and the Uni will review all capital expenditure - including approved projects.

NEW: Edinburgh’s Hogmanay outdoor events scheduled for tonight and tomorrow have been cancelled on “grounds of public safety”. That includes the street party and Princes Street Gardens concert which were due to welcome north of 50,000 people.
