It's so fucked up how Korra straight up makes Bolin commit sexual assault and paints him as a well meaning but gullible guy who just has delusions that the actress likes him back on the basis of her acting. At this point, unless the author specifies it, I just assume it's vibe coded. You can't tell me suddenly, a year or so after LLM coding became functional enough to make large scale projects, suddenly all the ports and mods people wanted came out and some nobody coders just had the skill to make them

I feel this about a lot of games, too. For me that game is Metroid 1. I can see why someone thinks it's cool and weird and you want to get lost in it and explore and dive into the unknown but for me that game just doesn't click. I wouldn't say Zero Mission "fixed it" though, as some claim.

When Nier does better than Weiss on his own and can walk into hundreds of enemies and activate spin to win moves, it's not the same game. Replicant remake feels like they looked at Automata reviews and put the Automata combat in the old game purely because it was more popular and people loved it.

The combat was about using the space around you, carving out moments to charge up your magic and hit as many things as you can at the same time. The game doesn't give you more complex enemies, they just get more health and there will be more of them. And that was the point.

Nier Replicant 1.22 degrades Weiss to a pod from Automata and Nier dances like a ballerina and it undermines their relationship narratively and ditches the gameplay for mindless button mashing. The man's doing odd jobs and can swing a stick. That's reflected in him over swinging and having combos that are clunky as shit. He's empowered by Weiss who literally gives him fucking magic and it's te tool you rely on for big AoE and burst damage during attack opportunities.

Player agency is a core aspect of the game's design and narrative, it makes sense why the killer robots are amazing at killing things effortlessly and this idea is woven into the themes of the game. Nier Gestalt is not this type of game though. Nier doesn't have formal training or experience

You get more freedom of expression with A2 at the cost of higher stakes because that is what her life is. At times the game really plays with your agency. When enemies hack you, you literally lose control, abilities and even the ability to see the game. You can remove your OS chip and kill yourself.

The best example of this is Monhun because it's a huge part of the gameplay to search for safe attack openings and exits when your character can't animation cancel or roll away from the monster after an attack. The commitment is the point. Yet every time they softened this, it became more popular.

That episode in particular goes a bit underdiscussed imo because it's such a good primer for what's about to come. The tests are a bit shonen-cliche-y but it does unmistakably declare that the series is not going to be about just beating up guys with better powers and it keeps that promise all run.

Compare that to TLA where all of the major villains are defeated by some ironic twist caused by their own hubris like Zhao or Azula, by some different view on the world or conflict like Zuko or Ozai or because victory was not tied to beating someone up like Long Feng, Jet or the sparky boom man.

The worst examples are the S1&2 season finales where Korra just suddenly gets a power boost and beats up the villain despite not having learned any lesson about them. Vs Amon she's literally just like "I turned on my air bending lol" without doing the air philosophy thing or proving his PoV wrong.

Like it's just a power display most of the time. The gang just get beat up by the bad guys, gets saved and then beats the bad guys back. In TLA, there used to be a different twist almost every time. Episode 5 pretty much spells out that Aang needs to think creatively and victory isn't tied to power.

It's really obvious with the setting because at no point does Korra spend time with the people living in the world or sees any particularly new places (other than in S4) but I just noticed that the conflicts are also quite boring.
