Customer: 'I'd like the biggest car you have.' Sales: 'We have this, only it can't park itself for plot reasons.
Enormous black car slightly less than half way unto a parking space.

At the risk of encouraging antisocial behaviour, I'm with you on can and may. I may also be a pedant 🤔

I'm inclined to agree that people should be allowed to do what they want, yet time after time it turns out what some want to do is behave in a predatory manner with unfortunate large scale impacts that eventually need controlling by the state (in places where the state isn't part of the problem).

Makes me wonder how long it will take for non-aggregating versions of such proteins to become available, either as somatic or gemline modification. Although how necessary they are I don't know, for instance I still think that the plaques found in Alzheimer's are a symptom rather than cause.

Sounds like impostor syndrome, which, if it's real, I believe is quite common amongst scientists. Not that, in my experience, thinking that's the case helps at all with the worrying! Unhelpful brains *sighs* PS I rather liked the idea of lipid rafts a decade ago but haven't kept up with data.

I heard about this recently and thought it a neat idea. Haven't read the article though so thank you for the recommendation.

Cool :) Much to look forward to as it all grows! Although I fear another dry spring is on the cards. We haven't had rain worth speaking of in 3-4 weeks. Ironically none since I added a new waterbutt to the system. Wishing you and your plants all the best.

I doubt the effects will be obvious to the general public for decades by which time the instigators will have fully lined their pockets and be safely living on mars. Or maybe the gap will be filled with LLMs, nothing could go wrong there :D

Surprised the Telegraph editors let this one slip though in the Mark Sedwill piece. Rather than 'Beijing, having invested in energy security for decades,' surely meant to write 'Beijing, having invested in expensive and unreliable energy instead of oil and gas'
Photo of newspaper with the offending text circled. Context is the Israel/US war on Iran.

Honestly given what some of the arable farmers do to the soil, environment and landscape solar farms and pylons will be a welcome improvement.

Sadly it's probably forever trapped behind a legal dispute so only available second hand :( Innovation is also good but relies on really neatly placed cards to show icons which can change in each player turn and so, to my mind, works much better in a virtual environment.

GtR is probably my favourite game, I read one description which has stayed with me 'wild and swingy' which it is, but I like that and it's swingy enough that I've seen people win their first game, if rarely. It also plays in under an hour so the swingyness is balanced by having another go :)

This is somewhat tangential but have you played Glory to Rome or Innovation, both by Carl Chudyk, and which feature mad combos. The latter was on boardgamearena last time I looked.

Ah, dandelion wine though! Just joking, made it once, unsuccessfully. But as a SF reference I felt it worth while. Personally I'm ok with dandelions although that may well be because they aren't taking over here at the moment :D

I don't know about US dead nettles but ours, while shallow rooted, are really invasive and come back from the tiniest bit of root in no time. Do you get that too and just live with it? They are good for early insects though, so swings and roundabouts :) I'm wondering about clover as a cover plant.

Possibly, there are the mid-terms to consider and having a falling out with Europe might help Maga. He generally makes the best of a charged situation. Even Iran could probably be spun to his advantage if US petroleum prices can be brought down.

Equally I can imagine that if Trump calms down for 6 months and doesn't overtly screw Ukraine over many in Europe will be all to happy to try to revert to the previous status quo no matter how much that's now a dead duck. Especially rolling back on spending commitments.

That is grim! I don't know about The Crow or many of the others mentioned but 1984? Really? Yet leaving the likes of The Handmaid’s Tale, Tess of the d’Urbervilles and An Inspector Calls, which aren't for children either? Personally I'd rather it was those removing the books that were kicked out.

'How can you not see that it's worse?' Easily. LLMs are the factory food equivalent for human interaction. CONVENIENT, seemingly similar or better and the costs not obvious. I predict great things for the sector, if not the users. Also never forget that humans aren't rational.

I have a preference towards local data storage and processing. It would also help drive local IT activity. I suspect that once Palantir has data it never gives it up and is more than happy up exploit it for commercial and political ends. Certainly that seems to be the attitude of the tech bros.

If a LLM says it's true it must be!¹ 🤔 Anyway, idiots aside I wish you well for the rest of your day. 1. I would have Claude compose a 1500 word essay on why LLMs are the work of the devil but I'm much too lazy for that kind of nonsense.
