That a Tennessee school district has banned ROOTS speaks to the book’s power. They can’t ban ideas, so they try this instead. I was a student in Tennessee when I first encountered ROOTS and the great Alex Haley. Like many others, I carry the power of this work with me. No book ban will stop us

And I understand why it sounded like I was minimizing it afterward. I wasn't trying to, but I didn't acknowledge the error strongly enough at first, which can come across as deflecting.

I learned a valuable lesson in Kindergarten. There was this bully who always picked on me. I was the tiniest thing in class (I was only 4, and I was small even for a 4 year old).
Anyway, one day at recess, he happened to pick on me within sight of my older sister. She didn't ask any questions or make any statements. She calmly picked up the nearest baseball bat and tried to knock his block clean off. From that day forward, I was never afraid of another bully.
