In Freas’s defense, he was assigned to write a cover for a Bradbury story in Planet Stories. Most of his stories to that point were Martian stories. Also, having a rad lady doing rad things was a common motif of both him and the magazine. There you go.

Got my author copies of Wars in the Stars from Flame Tree Press. Pretty great lineup of classic and contemporary Space Opera about war. My story “The Wreck” is also pretty amazing. 10/10, would write again.

LOL, the gotcha part in the second paragraph is truly hilarious. Who will think of the straight white rightwing men in the literary world? WHO? WHO?
Last week, the longlists for the National Book Awards were announced. Among the 20 authors in the fiction and nonfiction categories, nearly all are straight white males. Most are also on the political right, some even on the far right. Remarkably, mainstream media outlets haven’t reported this, perhaps because they don’t think it’s noteworthy. It’s as if we were living in 1956 rather than 2026.

If you’re scratching your head at this “news,” well, it’s because I made it up. Or rather, I inverted the particulars about the authors’ identities and their political views to make a point: If today, as a reader, you recoil at the thought of a time in which minorities were systematically marginalized when it came to the literary world’s public honors (and so much else), shouldn’t you also recoil now that the tables have been almost completely turned? And if you object to the right’s efforts to politicize the arts, won’t you also object when the efforts come from the left?

The SCP debacle with A24 is a great example. Yes, following the share alike license means they might not make a gigazillion dollars, but they may make close to a billion dollars because fans will buy it. But they won’t have all the money forever and ever.

The Internet Archive is a treasure trove of old pulp magazines. My favorite discovery is the Captains Future series: a magazine focused around one character, each issue containing a novel by Edmond Hamilton (and later other authors). Hamilton was a master of pacing and action, but not of… subtlety.
An excerpt from a Captain Future magazine: "The secret that would give its finder unlimited power” — A look of fear distorted his studious face. His whisper was thick with apprehension.
"If somebody evil got the whole secret, it would be a night-mare!"

No grand point here. Just funny seeing a book advocating against single sex/gender spaces while their son is writing books in which these same parents quote the Bible to explain to their kids why it’s okay for them to buy fun stuff but not their kids (it’s messed up).

Rowling, a Holocaust denier who claims no trans people died in the Holocaust because they don’t exist, has advocated against non-gendered single occupant restrooms because a man might go take a whizz after her, and that would threaten her. Especially trans-women, whom she sees as scum.

Les Taylor @lestaylorwriter.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
Now, as woke as the Berenstains apparently were (a Jew and a fellow Episcopalian), I don’t think they’d advocate for eliminating ALL single sex spaces, but it’s interesting how they highlight the internal rot that happens when we are constantly dividing things by sex and gender.

Les Taylor @lestaylorwriter.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
Joanne “Voldemort was Anti-Hitler” Knutter Rowling has been harping online about the importance of single sex spaces and how if you don’t divide people based on who makes large gametes, you’re a sexist man who hates women… by dressing as them?

So, we have a story about single sex spaces where girls are excluded until they make a space for all genders and the boys recognize that segregation hurts everyone. To nail home my point requires a trip to The Bad Place.

Les Taylor @lestaylorwriter.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
Suitably ashamed for their behavior, Brother and his gang take down their segregation sign and replace it with “Girls Welcome!”
GIRLS WELCOME!
"Love to!" said Sister, and while the whole gang headed for Frog Pond, Brother ran ahead and quickly changed the clubhouse sign to say
"Bear Country Boys Club-GIRLS WELCOME"!
The berries were delicious.

Mama has Papa grill salmon and honeycomb to attract the boys (milkshakes would have worked but that reference wouldn’t exist for another twenty years), and then they are invited into the rad treehouse to share their bounty.
Brother Bear chowing down on honey and salmon in the girls’ clubhouse and saying, "How would you like to come back to our place for dessert?" said Brother. "Our berry crop is ripe for picking."

Mama has another idea: for Sister to get all her girl friends together to form a cool club, with a tree house built by Papa, a master carpenter, as their base of operations. Sister wants to make a sign saying “No Boys Allowed” but Mama stops her.
With Papa Bear's help they built a very fine clubhouse high up in the old climbing tree.

Les Taylor @lestaylorwriter.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
Sister tells her parents about how Brother and his friends are absolute tossers. Papa, appropriately, threatens to destroy their clubhouse if they don’t let her in. Presumably with the National Guard escorting her into the clubhouse.
"You're absolutely right!" roared Papa.
"It isn't fair! Come, were going back there and make them take you into their silly club-and if they don't, I'm going to tear that clubhouse limb from limb!"

The boys go missing for three days (she never thinks to ask brother where their gang has been hanging out). Then she discovers they built a clubhouse. To her annoyance, they post a sign saying “No Girls Allowed.”

In the story, Sister Bear is the only girl in her brother’s friend group. It’s made clear she has female friends, but her and Brother got a bear gang going on, and Mama and Papa even point out the Smurfette issue. Sister ends up beating the boys in all their gang.
"I agree,
" said Mama. "But
think back-how would you have liked it when you were a cub if some little girl could outrun, outclimb, and outhit you?"
Brother and his friends didn't like losing either. And what made it worse was the way Sister celebrated every time she won.
Papa thought for a moment.
Her victory dance and cartwheels were annoying, but it was the war whoops that really got on everybodys nerves.
"I wouldn't have liked it," he said.
