Enjoying my new ‘career’ as Head of Primitive Technology at the Old Schoolhouse. This stone is merely a cladding in the two-foot thick mud walls. Over the years, voids have formed behind the cladding - often used by rodents to make a home. I’m filling the voids with mud. #building #work #Scotland

Tear it Up. Probably not the best album to go to if you’re listening to Black Uhuru for the first time (that would be Love Crisis, or maybe Showcase) because it’s live and not the best sound. But my goodness, the drum and bass on this, by Sly and Robbie, is simply sublime. #musicsky #reggae #music

Renovating the 2ft thick mud walls of the Old Schoolhouse. 1 wall is faced with handmade bricks, 2 others are lime harled (rendered) & this - the NW wall - is stone-faced for extra resilience against the Scottish weather. #historicbuilding #history #heritage #renovation #primativetechnology #mud

Four buckets ready to mix some mud to repair the wall. Water, clay, sand to mix the mud, and another bucket with lime mortar that's for repointing the stonework once the wall's been repaired.

The mud mix - who knew that making mud pies at pre-school would be such an essential part of my education

Whereas when I told my careers teacher I wanted to be a pro artist, writer and photographer, he laughed out loud - and told me I would need to get a proper job. I did all three, professionally, for almost 40 years - but only after trying a ‘proper’ job and absolutely hating every minute of it.

I often find nests. This one was on the ground yesterday in my garden, I think blown from the woodland next door. No eggs in it. My first found nest in my new Scottish home 🪹 Any ID suggestions welcome.

Jason Bradbury. Not sure if this is a case of least or most? A woman fawned over me in a cafe for ten minutes before realising she’d misidentified me. I actually knew Jason at the time, because we lived in the same town, both frequented that cafe, and my wife gave his daughter art lessons.

Back to basics 🎨 Today I’m sticking to the colours I was shown at art school (Pic 2) The art materials industry has exploded & it’s easy to believe you need the latest fancy shades, most of which can be mixed from a few. So, step aside buffs, quinacridones and operas - give me headspace to paint!

The original colour palette which Laura Andrew was taught to paint with at art school. White, lemon and cadmium yellow. Yellow ochre, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, ultramarine, cerulean, viridian, sap green, burnt sienna, burnt umber and raw umber.

Laura’s ability to mix colours never ceases to amaze me. I’ve seen her mix EXACT colour matches when doing restorations of antique paintings. It’s a skill that also serves her well when she’s painting the natural world.
