Watching this unfold from over the pond in Australia is like watching an sf Netflix series I didn’t ask for… Fingers crossed none of our politicians over here are thinking this is a good idea- we do have a tendency to use the US and UK as examples…

Sure, they could spend that time and money fine-tuning for something useful, but X doesn’t go nuts because your AI model just cracked some obscure medical calculation. It wants to see AI building fake-GTA 6 in blender. #AI #Economics #FrontierModels

So OpenAI and other companies fine tune their sprawling general purpose models to excel at social media friendly tasks like making 3D renders or soulless games (or flavourless coffee) because it gets them the attention they need to keep the lights on.

And viral on social media looks great to potential investors. It drives clicks and daily active users, and inspires copycats galore. Remember The Great Studio Ghibli Heist of 2025..?

Certain types of AI use seem to go viral very easily. Games and 3D is one of them. The internet goes bonkers for an AI that can make a janky flappy birds clone or a sim-city-esque abomination made in Three.js.

So, they’re not trying to replace workers with computer using agents (or convince employers that they can fire their pesky human employees), why all the 3D? It’s all about the 👀👀👀.

Leon Furze @leonfurze.com · 07/09/2026
It’s certainly not to replace the 3D graphic design industry. Not that OpenAI is particularly altruistic or sensitive to the needs of human artists… but economically speaking replacing every graphic designer in the world would be a rounded error to OpenAI’s (ludicrous) valuation at this point.

Because for many reasons, it’s better to use AI to work with code than to work directly in a desktop environment; it’s far safer and more predictable to hand an AI model an API than a virtual mouse. So… why all the flashy demos of GPT-6 Astra creating 3D models (like my lovely coffee? ☕)

Probably the best question to ask about the computer using capabilities of AI models like ChatGPT is… “but why?” And the answer isn’t necessarily as straightforward as it looks.

I like it, and it also sidesteps the metaphorical confusion surrounding “agency” and “agentic” and “agents.”

I’ve found as a small business owner I can offload a certain amount of work to a combo of API/MCP via code which is safer and more tightly scoped than CUA. CUA comes in at the tail end when there’s stuff with no API capability or reliant on clicking buttons with a mouse 🐭

Thanks for sharing. I like “CUA” because it’s a helpful reminder that these things are software, just doing software things.

The big problem I see with this is that it only works at an individual level. Imagine this in an org setting. I wouldn’t let an employee near this kind of thing in my organisation if I weren’t a one man business…

Computer Using AI is Solved
Two years ago I wrote an article arguing that Anthropic's "Computer Use" - then in beta testing - would be the next ChatGPT moment for education. At the time, computer using agents (CUAs) were not common, and Anthropic's version was strictly limited to research, running only inside a virtual computer. It had restricted access to a few sandboxed applications like the open source LibreOffice, and a limited browser.

Controlling Hardware with Generative Artificial Intelligence
Since 2024, the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT and Claude to proficiently code has emerged as a key driver of their evolution. Their ability to integrate with both software and physical devices presents opportunities for innovative applications. This convergence of AI with everyday technology could revolutionise fields such as agritech, enhancing efficiencies and functionalities.

The term "slop," defined as low-quality, AI-generated content, often reflects an imbalance between reader effort and author intent. Surveys reveal that readers largely attribute the fault to authors rather than the technology, highlighting frustration over perceived carelessness. Ultimately, slop represents a reader's judgement based on perceived effort and substance.

Is This a Good Use of the Technology? Is It a Good Use of Your Brain?
The article discusses two crucial questions regarding AI: whether its use is appropriate and if it effectively engages one’s intellect. While these questions seem straightforward, their implications are nuanced and context-dependent, influencing how students and educators interact with AI technologies. Understanding these complexities aids in navigating AI's evolving role in learning.

Is the Tide Turning Against AI in Australia?
On Sunday, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that NSW may restrict Year 12 students from unsupervised take-home assessments, following a letter from the Deputy Premier. Meanwhile, South Australia announced a royal commission into AI, highlighting diverging state approaches: NSW acts quickly for student protection, while SA seeks comprehensive understanding before regulation.

The Window of Critique for AI is Closing Fast
Large language model-based AI is increasingly integrated into daily life, making it challenging for critics to highlight its limitations. As technology becomes user-friendly, the inner workings are often obscured, akin to past experiences with telecommunication and internet infrastructures. This shift prompts a need for continued scrutiny and understanding of AI systems' complexities and implications.

How I’ve Used Claude for Book Marketing
The use of GenAI in writing, the arts, music, and pretty much any creative industry is highly contentious, and for good reason. The copyright concerns alone are enough to infuriate most writers, and the constant onslaught of AI slop is flooding social media platforms and online spaces. I've written extensively about my position on AI: somewhere in the middle, seeing the potential and the risks.

Problem Patterns in AI: Beyond Hallucinations
The article discusses the rise of "AI slop", characterised by generic, uninspired content produced by AI, often resulting in stylistic and substantive issues, rather than just factual inaccuracies. It categorises these problems into seven types, highlighting the reputational risks associated with careless AI use and the need for nuanced discussions about AI-generated outputs.

Australia Just Set the Terms for AI
Earlier this week, the Prime Minister delivered a one-two punch on copyright and data centres: two of the most contentious national conversations on AI. Speaking at the University of Sydney, Anthony Albanese announced a set of national Australian standards for AI: a single framework covering copyright, data centres, energy, water, and the workforce, coordinated by a new Office of AI inside the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, with legislation to be brought to Parliament early next year.

LLMs are Digital Skeleton Keys
Skeleton keys functioned by exploiting shared mechanisms in older locks, similarly, Large Language Models (LLMs) can act as digital skeleton keys. They perform versatile tasks within code-accessible environments, yet their potential remains underutilised in conventional chatbot interfaces. Users should explore beyond chatbots to unlock LLMs' true capabilities.

AI;DR: When readers stop trusting writers
In February this year, a safety researcher named Mrinank Sharma resigned from Anthropic with a long, public letter. Resignation letters from AI labs are a genre of their own now, and this one was widely shared and picked over. One reply stood out, from a developer named David Minnigerode posted on Threads: "Sorry that is. definitely tl;dr. But also kinda ai;dr Some of those sentences…yeesh."
