In history today, the US Congress voted to authorize an unprovoked invasion of Iraq in 2002. The noir of the day is 1948's THIEVES' HIGHWAY, directed by Jules Dassin for 20th Century Fox and starring Lee J. Cobb, Richard Conte, and Valentina Cortese.

Good morning! It is October 10th in the United Socialist States of America. Today we commemorate Historical Sites Day. Live our legacy! We celebrate the California condor, gymnogyps californianus. Thelonious Monk was born today in 1917; Orson Welles died on this day in 1985.
A California condor, a large bird with black and white wings and a pink, wattled head, spreads its wings while perching on a rock in the mountains.

Anyway it's gonna be a hell of a series, as someone who has literally been watching the W since it began believe me when I tell you we are seeing some historically incredible basketball in a league that is making a real push through tons of bullshit. Some historical talent out there right now

They can really clamp down on the Dream's scoring but the more they have to rely on the 3 the more the Dream's pesky, relentless defense is gonna force turnovers and let the game get away from them. They're a lot deeper, though, and can switch out and shift strategies in ways the Dream can't

Leonard Pierce @leonardpierce.bsky.social · 9h
Can't help but love the Valks in this matchup, but I don't think it's gonna be an easy path to the title. The Dream are gonna give them fits in a lot of ways (though, of course, vice versa) and some of the matchups are really gonna give them hell

I been sayin' it and I'm gonna keep sayin' it: If you are not watching the WNBA right now, you are missing the chance to see arguably the greatest women's basketball player who ever lived at the peak of her ability. Why would you not want to do that

I don't even know what "Trump is being nice to China but China is selling weapons to Iran and Iran is attacking us because we attacked them because of Trump" is supposed to establish. Like what side are you on? What do you think is happening?

Not to conjure @leftistwonk.bsky.social here but even with everything that's happening right now so many Americans have no politics beyond "bad man bad"

Also why do people keep putting this shit in my timeline, China SHOULD arm Iran against us

I'm pretty sure that the world's biggest oil producer is the US, famously a country that never does anything bad
010
Leonard Pierce @leonardpierce.bsky.social · 14h
Oh, so we did. That was when Putin started being bad
000
Leonard Pierce @leonardpierce.bsky.social · 14h
Usual caveats: I don't like Putin, I don't like Trump, and blah blah blah, but is he actually doing anything that every president going back to and including Clinton didn't also do? Also if you don't think we should import oil from evil dictators I have bad news for you about Saudi Arabia

I agree with the folks who say that Richard and Matt in combination are featuring a low-energy hyper-irony that is kind of bringing the show down this season but there was no way I was not going to absolutely love the Frank Sidebottom tribute

My phone now knows the word "bangaranga" but it still thinks I'm trying to say "ducking"

Anyway, to reiterate: Who is the bangaranga? It is me, I'm the bangaranga

I'm gonna choose to believe that it's the typo that will result in this getting no likes and not because it's not funny and nobody knows what I'm talking about

Bangaranga, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Ban-ga-ran-ga: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of four steps down the tongue. Lm She was Ranga in slacks. She was Gabby at school. She was Bangarita on the dotted line. But in my arms she was always the bangaranga

Good morning! It is October 9th in the United Socialist States of America. Today we commemorate Hockey Day. Hit the ice and play! We celebrate the lanceleaf coreopsis, coreopsis lanceolata. Francis Wayland Parker was born today in 1837; Benjamin Banneker died on this day in 1806.
A group of lanceleaf coreopses, flowers with bright yellow petals, grow in a garden.

The skills to deflect Ideas Guys, to channel frustration into productive work, to listen without judgment, to contribute even if you're not sure about the end result: these things pay off in all walks of life, even if you won't live long enough to see the world after capitalism get constructed.

There is also the importance of building parallel/alternative structures and systems, party formations, etc. for when you CAN seize state power, and you really can't do that all by yourself outside of existing institutions. How will you run the government if you have no practice in doing so?

"It is obvious that the 'Lefts' have mistaken their desire, their politico-ideological attitude, for objective reality. That is a most dangerous mistake for revolutionaries to make...we must not regard what is obsolete to us as something obsolete to a class, to the masses."

Leonard Pierce @leonardpierce.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
"To attempt to circumvent this difficulty by skipping the arduous job of utilizing reactionary parliaments for revolutionary purposes is absolutely childish. You want to create a new society, yet you fear the difficulties involved in forming a parliamentary group made up of devoted Communists!"

Leonard Pierce @leonardpierce.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Certainly Lenin is frank about the *value* and *utility* of parliamentary work, and says discussing the limits and dysfunction of electoralism is crucial. But he is also warning that it's foolish to abandon that struggle prematurely, and that the process is necessary to build good leaders.
