#WIPSnips Because I am who I am, ofc there’s food in StringsWIP! Au has made a hobby of cooking since he was young, despite having a literal live-in chef in Jahnri.

“And I’d be grateful for your company,” Au said, washing his hands, standing and going to the counter. At the curious tilt of Jahnri’s head, he motioned. “Hand me those peppers.”
Jahnri pushed the sweet peppers across the marble, and Au began deftly to cut them. The juice tinted his fingertips red. They worked in practiced tandem to prepare the meal, conversation forgone in favor of companionable quiet. With beyond human dexterity, Jahnri carved tavki meat from delicate bones. He sautéed the resulting mincemeat in herbaceous broth while Au prepared vegetables, drizzling them with oil and seasoning as they cooked. The sum of their work went over kiblani rice, broth seeping down through the tender grains.
Everyone who had been present in the conference room gathered again around the dining table. Lynden appeared from outdoors; Mairln and Keetins stayed late; Nktay left their slate facedown beside their place setting. They spoke of inconsequential things or nothing at all, ate savory tavki pilaf and the spring salad Jahnri had prepared to go with it, drank starfield wine—a vintage that demanded to be savored. Dessert was baked custard in flaky crust, warm from the ovens and dusted in semi-sweet cocoa powder. The cocoa clung in Nktay’s whiskers despite how they licked at it.

The following dawn he announced himself at the gates of the Jerome estate. Where Valbona’s property had been ornately fenced, on display to passersby like a pubic building, Jerome’s more resembled a grand ancestral house, beautifully kept and walled for privacy. The gate, burnished gold, featured forged stars and soldered swirls to invoke the spiral arms of the galaxy. Lynden mapped the metalwork while he waited, his vision blurred with remnants of uneasy sleep beneath a garishly painted bench.

Lynden would start his account when he left his home moon at 15. That’s when the good stories start, he’d argue. It would be an entertaining read—but not wholly honest. If asked, he’d admit that readily enough. He’s protecting cultural secrets more than personal ones, after all. End 🧵

Caleb would do a much better job with an objective account, but he might forget that he’s writing his own memoir and end up writing Sachial’s biography instead. Mara would write a searing tell-all. It gains a romantic subplot halfway through, but most of the word count is outing folks’ idiocy. 5/

Conrad is also writing his fancifully—like pulp fiction sci-fi, to be specific—but rather because that’s /actually/ how he perceives his life most days. 😅 Miriam’s is sharp and witty, uplifting but also cautionary. She’s had triumphs and made mistakes, and she’d want to offer all as examples. 2/

Au is reserved, regal, but deeply passionate and keen-edged. 🌒 Lynden is energetic, vivacious, and warm, but sometimes detached. ☀️ There IS a subversion with their color schemes, Au being heavily associated with gold despite Lynden being my sunshine boy. Definitely still figuring them out!

In Embers, Israa is sapphic. Her partner Viray is a more minor character, but their relationship has tangible influence on the story. In StringsWIP, Aeva is lesbian! (Deuceridge) Kade doesn’t care for sweets, and he’s pretty indifferent to most food. He’ll decline almost anything in the right (wrong) mood. Conrad can’t stand food that takes “too much effort”, like lobster or crab, but he’ll happily enjoy it if someone else does the hard part. 😅 2/3
