#AwesomeCharacters Ooh this is a VERY fun one! 👀 Forgive the length of the 🧵😂 (Deuceridge) For all Kade isn’t a fiction reader, he’s writing his like a dime novel, embellishing and dramatizing in an attempt to obfuscate. When he reads it back, he’s horrified by how honest it actually is. 1/

#AugCharWork I rarely set out to create a given archetype, but recognizing where characters might align—as I notice traits and patterns—is a fun part of getting to know them! I got CRAZY excited when I realized I could finally have a sun ☀️ and moon 🌒 coded pair with Lynden and Au (StringsWIP)! 1/2

#AugCharWork (for StringsWIP) I need Lynden to take ownership of his future. He had a rough start, and he’s gone from being stuck in survival mode to taking some necessary time to rest and heal. Now he needs to figure out what he wants and where he’s going—and feel secure enough to act on it.

#AwesomeCharacters Gold goes to Quinn🥇 from Fault Lines. Don’t let his mad scientist vibes fool you—he’s a true “do no harm” sort of doctor, a mother hen, and a great cook. He’s also one of only two characters that neither side can bring themselves to vilify at any point during the story. 1/

Sachial LOVES the rain—he makes it halfway into book two before he knows it’s a real thing, not just faded mythology. He’s outside enjoying it every chance he gets. 🌧️ Conrad is terrified of storms; if it’s raining hard enough, he’s curled up under the covers. 😅

#SpoonieAuthChat Food is always, ultimately, a positive in my work—it’s comfort, connection, care, community. It’s something to gather around, to share, to savor, and often something that heals. Whenever I do speculative biology, diet and culture surrounding food is often my starting point!

#AwesomeCharacters Ooh what an interesting question! Truly dislike? No. I’ve got some sort of fondness for them all, even if it’s “love to hate” vibes. I do, however, find it more tedious/tiresome to spend time in certain POVs. Kit—from Faultverse—is like that; 1/2

#AwesomeCharacters For sure! In Faultverse, Mara and Nym are lesbians! 🧡🩷🤍 In fact, a decent chunk of later plot hinges on Nym going “ohnoshespretty”, tripping and falling. 😅 They’re very good for one another, in many ways. art by lytiic.carrd.co! 1/2

#BonApriltit 26 (StringsWIP) Au dislikes anything that tastes of vitamins or reminds him of medicine. He frequently bakes with fresh fruit, but blanches at artificial fruit or floral flavors. Lynden won’t eat cold leftovers. It reminds him too much of his childhood. 1/3

#BonAprilti The evening meal on Maluus depends a lot on the context. If there’s company over, the typical 2-3 courses tend to multiply. Artistry is highly valued across the whole planet, and the evening meal is where that’s most on display in elaborate or visually impressive dishes. 1/

A snip from Embers, my sf novella WIP 🔥 #wipsnips #sff #writesky
white text on an off-white background:

Israa stared at the heater, glowing faintly with its output of warmth. She thought of the apex—Wheston, she corrected, making herself use his name—and how he’d curled up beside it during the few nights he’d spent with them. It was the closest he’d ever gotten to the group on his own initiative. Agraive’s apex, capable of maintaining its optimal body temperature through seventeen-hour nights that could dip below freezing. Yet he’d slunk into their midst and curled up like a stray stxcat beside a humming ship’s engine. She’d been able to count his vertebrae.
“I’m not stupid.” That had caught her by surprise—he’d said so little in his short time with them, highly articulate but only within the needs of the assignment. She turned the words and tone over in her mind—dry and sardonic, just a hint of gallows humor. Or am I reading too deeply into it?
“I think he knows,” she said, slowly, “how poor his chances are.”
“Suicide with extra steps, do you think?” Viray asked, halfway into her sleeping bag.
Israa shook her head, gaze still on the gently glowing heater. “I don’t know. I hope not.”
“For our sake? Or for his?”
Israa let out a breath heavy with apprehension. “Both, dearest. Both, I fear.”

Sachial does not, for good reason. Caleb doesn’t, either, but for simplicity’s sake rather than reason’s. Kade… I wouldn’t say fears death, but he does not want to die. Conrad fears it terribly, despite how earnestly he anticipates it. Asher struggles to conceptualize death; he wishes he feared it.

#BonApriltit (new scifi wip) There’s a lot of variation for the midday meal on Maluus. It’s frowned upon to eat while working/on the go, which is meant to encourage an actual sit-down break, but the unintended result is some people simply can’t stop for a midday meal. Sandwiches are common, 1/

#BonApriltit (new scifi wip) Breakfast on Maluus is sweet, indulgent; for upper classes it’s downright leisurely, and for working folks it’s only slightly less so. It’s a cultural cue to slow down and enjoy the presentation and prospects of a new day. The most common breakfast 1/3

#AntagonistApril There is a “pure evil” antagonist in Deuceridge, who is entirely aware and proud of their evil ways/actions. Keeping it vague, there’s a lot of interesting comparison and contrast between this antagonist and Kade, who can play the villian so well that he might even fool himself.

#BonApriltit Faultverse lacks a strong circadian rhythm, so people structure their days around work and social interactions; mealtimes are loosely defined. Breakfast is consistent, and typically the heartiest meal in preparation for the day. Lunch happens whenever your comrades/coworkers/friends 1/

#BonApriltit A TAD late to the party, but so excited to find this and hop in! Food worldbuilding/symbolism is a staple in my writing, and one of my favorite things to learn about others’ work! I’ll likely hop around WIPs, but I’m starting to explore a new scifi world, so I might lean into that one✨

Dance is a HUGE motif in Deuceridge. Kade, Asher, and Miriam are all excellent dancers in a number of styles. Conrad is… well, he’s certainly got the spirit 😅 #QueerPrompts
black text on a white bg, reading:

“You invited me to dance,” he said, when she gave him a put-upon look. He pulled her close, coaxing her into a little twist of their hips. “Let’s dance.”
Miriam laughed softly, kissed him, and obliged. In an open hold, they pranced through brisk triple steps and indulgent twirls. The lead slipped occasionally from Kade to his doll; when he and Asher had learned the coaster step and the Charleston and the anchor step together, they had often switched off. Miriam had long ago learned, and didn’t mind, this peculiarity of her favorite dance partner.
They traveled across the dance floor, never still, a bouncing glide that suited the jaunty music. For Kade, the dance was confession; for Miriam, it was communion. Though lost in the
crush of people, they stood out, radiant, among the milieu. They spun briefly apart at times, but found one another again as if joined by a tether, their hands entwining. Neither ran short of
breath, but nor did they hold energy in reserve—they danced as though it were the last hand of a card game, all-in. They danced as though life were only the Lindy Hop

#AwesomeCharacters Sachial has several opportunities to let things lie, to live within the system. One such, in particular, he’d give just about anything to go back and take; he’d get to learn the truths of his world without also setting its destruction into irrevocable—and uncomprehending—motion.

#AwesomeCharacters Sachial can be VERY stubborn, definitely gets stuck on things, and does not forget personal sleights. His follow through, though, might be questionable. He’s got a lazy streak, and if he discovers something more interesting than his original goal he’ll go in that direction. 1/3

Sachial would be surprisingly fine! He’s met architects of his world, and he’s more interested in learning from them than holding them accountable for his own suffering. The rest of the Fault Lines cast might have harsher feelings. 😅 I’d stand a chance with Caleb—I rewrote his death, after all, 1/3

Today’s #WIPSnips is the perfect reason to share something from the opening paragraphs of the novella WIP, Embers! #WritingCommunity #sff
black text on an off-white background, reading:

Wheston hunched in the shifting sand, mired in inarticulate thought, hollowed by hunger. Chill had robbed his skin of color, the scars on the backs of his bony hands standing out in lurid mauve against gray.

He quivered, spine straightening, still crouched but arching up on the balls of his feet. He heard the shuffling steps of his pursuit, angling his ears towards it. He breathed with intention, stoking warmth in his chest and letting it seep back into his muscles, needing them to be loose enough to move. He quivered, his breath appearing in the still air, and he resented that escaped warmth.

In order, absolutely! I discover a lot of the story as I go. Also, if I jump into the scenes I’m most excited about, I have less motivation to work through the more difficult parts. If I have an exceptionally vivid snippet of dialogue or description, I’ll jot it down in a separate brainstorming doc.

Very rarely, and they’ll usually stick around as unattached characters waiting for a story of their own. I find characters themselves pretty impossible to part with entirely, but I can recognize when they don’t add anything to a given story, or don’t fit the tone. In Fault Lines,

For Deuceridge, the 1st book—WatS—happens over approx a week (a very hectic week indeed!). The 2nd, conversely, spans about a year; there’s a two year gap between. We see the most of Conrad, Kade, and Asher POV in the 1st, and more of Kade, Miriam, and Anaya in the 2nd. I have a prequel planned, 1/
