In a new #Viewpoint we argue that the binary definition of #BiologicalSex based on gamete size is a scientifically robust framework that is entirely compatible with the diversity of sexual phenotypes and human gender identities. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Biological Sex Is Binary and Rooted in Anisogamy
Drawing on empirical evidence and evolutionary theory, we argue that biological sex is most coherently defined as a binary classification of reproductive strategies rooted in anisogamy (the productio....

Think of CO₂ removal like a time machine. How far back does planting 100 million trees take us? One mature tree takes up ~25 kg of CO₂/year, so 100 million trees will take up 2.5 MtCO₂. That's a time machine that takes us back ~33 minutes in a year. Nature will not save us from fossil fuel CO₂.

In a sea of opinions about the role of LLMs in academics I offer my own. Apart from being harmful, exploitive plagiarism machines, LLMs rob us of the opportunity to experience the gift of friction in writing, which changes how we think. We must not give away that gift. doi.org/10.1002/fee....

Do males strategically associate with mating partners, and how does social context influence their choices? Excited to share my first publication!🎉 It’s been an amazing journey and thanks to @lennartwinkler.bsky.social, John Fitzpatrick & all co-authors for your hard work! doi.org/10.1002/ece3...

Male Strategic Association With Mating Partners Under Varying Social Contexts in a Livebearing Fish
We found that in halfbeaks, a shoaling fish species, males preferentially associated with an opposite sex pair (i.e., a female and a male) over rival males, but showed no preference when choosing bet....

Does #SexualSelection fuel #Speciation? Our new #meta-analysis of comparative studies finds support for a positive relationship, but the rather moderate global effect suggests it’s not necessarily a dominant force. doi.org/10.1093/evle...

Sexual selection and speciation: a meta-analysis of comparative studies
Abstract. Understanding the drivers of biodiversity is a central goal in evolutionary biology. In particular, sexual selection has long been proposed as a

📜 Why are trade-offs often so elusive? Does the distribution of resources in a population affect if life history trade-offs emerge? We tested this experimentally in the Australian field cricket using a re-sampling approach. Now out #OpenAccess in @journal-evo.bsky.social: doi.org/10.1093/evol...

Interested in interactions between females & males on the path to fertilization? We reviewed the evidence for these complex female-male interactions. Thanks to my amazing co-authors for taking me along on this exciting journey (my first review paper)! Out now #OpenAccess doi.org/10.1530/REP-...
Figure 2 from Daupagne et al 2024 (https://doi.org/10.1530/REP-24-0238). Female–male interaction effects occur on the successive steps of the fertilization process in species with both internal (A) and external (B) fertilization.

31 December 1995. Still the perfect goodbye.
The final Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. The entire page is mostly white as they're in the winter snow. The pair is walking with a sledge, nicely duffled in in scarves, hats, gloves. Calvin delightedly exclaims 'wow, it really snowed las night! Isn't it wonderful?'. Hobbes follows up with 'Everything familiar has disappeared! The world looks brand-new!' -- A new year... a fresh, clean start!' adds Calvin. As they look over the landscape, Hobbes observes 'it's like having a big white sheet of paper to draw on!' -- 'A day full of possibilities!' Calvin affirms. They get ready on their sledge and Calvin tells his friend 'it's a magical world, Hobbes, ol' buddy... let's go exploring!', and the pair sledges off into the wintery landscape.

Intro: I am an evolutionary biologist interested in sexual selection & the interaction of evolution & ecology. In my research I combine experiments with meta-analysis. I worked on a variety of different species from flatworms to mice & now fish. For more see: www.researchgate.net/profile/Lenn...
