Obelisk at #Garendon Park and monument at #Shepshed (originally at #Dishley) to Ambrose Phillipps (d. 1737), who landscaped the parkland on return from his Grand Tour and decided it needed an obelisk (and Temple of Venus, and Triumphal Arch, now shrouded awaiting restoration). @vch-home.bsky.social

The trackbed of the Charnwood Forest Railway (LNWR) near #Loughborough is crossed by this bridge near the former Knightthorpe Lodge. Road above didn't go 'anywhere'. More investigation needed. Built at request of owners of Garendon Park? Or Knightthorpe Lodge? Why? Who paid? @vch-home.bsky.social

Do you live in or near Bardon, Markfield or Stanton under Bardon? Would you like to find out more about their histories, or contribute what you already know? We have a new volunteer project starting this month. @charnwoodforest.bsky.social @vch-home.bsky.social

This looks interesting. The tours should be good - there's a huge amount of recent research on this church and its carvings, and the chance to visit the tower gives the opportunity to see the original Angel, not the copy downstairs.

As well as talks and a display about Nanpantan at Loughborough's Old Rectory Museum on Saturday (4 July), we also have a guided walk along Nanpantan Road, either Thursday 16th or Wednesday 22 July, booking essential #FestivalofArchaeology

This is an otherwise very legible Leicestershire probate inventory for a yeoman farmer in the 1730s. But Wagons and what? faelts? What are they? any ideas anyone? It's probably not much help, but they are worth £12 within an inventory total of £429 @vch-home.bsky.social @materialwills.bsky.social

Viewing talk by Simon Bradley for @visitchurches.bsky.social about Pevsner's county architectural guides. Key sources included VCH: “the information it contains is impeccable". Ongoing VCH work in turn benefits from Pevsner's work and its updates by Simon & others: thank you. @vch-home.bsky.social

St Peter's (Anglican) church Loughborough, built 1910-12, was high church, with many images of saints in windows, not all well known, e.g. St Polycarp (of Byzantium, bishop of Smyrna, now Izmir, modern Turkey). I especially like the windows showing (1/2)

Pleased to hear that Charnwood Forest will be applying for UNESCO Geopark status this year. Some of the rocks contain fossils of some of the oldest living creatures we know about (that lived 560 million years ago). Other rocks have trees almost growing out of them or resting on them

Wonderful to see this tribute to Air Vice Marshal "Johnnie" Johnson CB, CBE, DSOx3, DFCx2, DL (1915-2001) on the end on a terrace in Loughborough. He was the most decorated fighter pilot in WWII and a former pupil of Loughborough Grammar School.
