Reposted by LegosArchiveQuite Interesting @qi.com · 14/03/2025The ‘step’ in words like ‘stepmother’ or ‘stepsister’ has nothing to do with our word ‘step’. It comes from Old English ‘astiepan’ (‘to bereave’), which produced ‘steopcild’ meaning ‘orphan’. So ‘stepmother’ originally meant someone who became mother to an orphan. 732061
LegosArchive @legosarchive.bsky.social · 16/03/2025I don't know how I didn't figure this out until just now, but the English word "reckon" is cognate with the German word "rechnen", meaning to count, reckon, or calculate. Of course, the word "reckon" is also used in this sense, an example being "I reckon it's worth about $12." 000

LegosArchive @legosarchive.bsky.social · 22/01/2025Listen to how the "dæg" in "tō dæg" is pronounced. That is how you would pronounce the "mæġ" in "mæġden". Old English was pretty interesting when it came to spelling and pronunciation of words, and I love it for that. 110
LegosArchive @legosarchive.bsky.social · 22/01/2025Also, as for the pronunciation of "mæġden", in Old English (specifically the "mæġ" part of the pronunciation), I will refer you to this video of The Lord's Prayer in Old English, as you will get a better understanding it than I can currently explain. youtu.be/ZbNovjvjqt8?...youtu.beFæder Ure - The Lord's Prayer in Old EnglishYouTube video by Glossologia 110

LegosArchive @legosarchive.bsky.social · 22/01/2025That's right! The word "maid" indeed comes from the word "maiden". It comes from the Middle English versions of the word, which were "mayden" or "meiden". These of course, came from the Old English word "mæġden", from Proto-West Germanic "*magadīn", from Proto-Germanic "*magaþs". 110

LegosArchive @legosarchive.bsky.social · 18/01/2025It should also be noted that Old English is not mutually intelligible to modern-day English speakers. However, you will have a better time understanding it if you know some of the other Germanic languages (such as Dutch, German, Danish, Icelandic, etc.) 232
LegosArchive @legosarchive.bsky.social · 18/01/2025Yes, Old English has a lot more Germanic words compared to Modern English, both in pronunciation and in spelling. The structure of the language is also very similar to that of German. Here's some example of Old English being spoken: youtu.be/ZbNovjvjqt8 youtu.be/mVyXDYp60BE 121

LegosArchive @legosarchive.bsky.social · 04/01/2025The word eleven in Old English (which, as you said before, is "endleofan") is pretty interesting in and of itself, as evolved from the word in Proto-Germanic, *ainalif ("one left") (i.e. one left over after having already counted to ten). That itself is a compound of *ainaz and *-lif. 010
LegosArchive @legosarchive.bsky.social · 04/01/2025Impressive indeed. I'm also fascinated and also admire the fact that they took the code from the Quake engine and went on to add and refine it into something that would become a staple of the game itself. 000
LegosArchive @legosarchive.bsky.social · 04/01/2025That's pretty cool that you learned English through Half-Life and other FPS games.
