There is a REAL way: Enforce time keeping just like Gary begged us to in AD&D 1e (page 37). "Failure to keep careful track of time expenditure by player characters will result in many anomalies in the game." Which is exactly what you're talking about. A stamina system is just wonky timekeeping.

Anything could be friendly unless it was nonsapient opposed to life like undead. Occupied castles were common (this is historically accurate), but may or may not be friendly: It's up to the players and also how the GM plays the result of the tables. Below this as the rules for avoiding encounters.
Encounter reactions AD&D 1e DMG Page 65

Any intelligent creature which can be conversed with will react in some
way to the character that is speaking. reaction is determined by rolling
percentile dice, adjusting the score for charisma and applicable loyalty adjustment as if the creature were a henchman of the character speaking, and the modified score of the percentile dice is compared to the table

Trad RPGs skill systems need an overhaul. Success/fail + skill name should not be a foundational pillar of a system, it should sit ON foundational pillars. Instead, it sits on the GM. This keeps skill systems oversimplified because any additional mechanics is seen as adding to GM burden. (Art by me)

@unboxedcereal.bsky.social I decided to glance at Reddit and found this gem that I'm sure you will just love; specifically the line: "In role playing games the tool we use to overcome the unnecessary obstacle is storytelling." The one just after it clarifies he really does mean story telling.

Levels need to exist because that's what pathfinder writers think an RPG is. Yet mechanically or narratively there's no explanation nor exploration of what it means for the setting that some people have guns that atomise you and some people have laser glocks. Levels just EXIST.

Yes. Had this exchange recently (see pic). My reply was not taken well. There's a huge swathe of the community who thinks Roleplaying = Play acting detailed descriptions; nothing else. CERTAINLY NOT THE MECHANICS. To them the mechanics don't "speak" of happening in the fantasy world.

Gygax: "Here are the rules and tables for making dungeons fast because this is a feature complete game." Later Game designers: "Yeah the GM is just supposed to make detailed maps without support that's normal. :))"

I'm convinced my two online players of 5 years are the best roleplayers alive. They can effortlessly play MULTIPLE characters at once. I don't need to call for rolls; they know the rules. They want to do something, they roll as appropriate. I'm spoiled as a GM. One depicted himself as a TI-84 here:

Absolutely. But that's what people think an RPG is now.

Yeah I agree. Now, EABA kind of did this with Stuff! It's a book for designing... stuff. Lots of stuff. Weapons, vehicles, gadgets, creatures and even civilisations. Excellent layout too. Near there back there's a universale scale chart and a damage conversion table for other popular generic systems

Conditional Injury in Pyramid 3/120: Alternate GURPS V might be worth looking at. Yes it's GURPS but the design of the alternate injury system is interesting. It's not HP and it's not just 'resist KO' either. (Pain replaces shock if using those rules).

BITD's "whole conflict" game rhythm shows this. This is not the structure of any kind of trad RPG. It isn't one. You cannot play it like a trad RPG, because it IS a conversation. Nothing exists until the conversation instantiates it. (Screencap source: www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAl8... )

That makes sense. A friend of mine has a d20 modern book, and I think he used it in the past. He went through it again after years of my GURPS games, recently was like "How did I ever think this was good or acceptable?" Pic related.

I can't stand this in TTRPG design. If you design a class-based RPG by slicing up basic physical actions and gating them off behind classes, you don't know what you're doing. Gate off high to extreme proficiency at them? Sure. But not the ability to do it at all (Image 1 is Lancer, image 2 is D&D4e)

It DOES effect me. Here's @unboxedcereal.bsky.social's thread from Twitter that also describes my experience. My group scattered to the 4 winds and massively different schedules after completing university, so I need a new one. Harder than it sounds. (original) twitter.com/unboxedcerea...

Wanted to discuss this take by @mattcolville.bsky.social here instead of on X. I get what he's saying. D&D promises to let you inhabit and explore a fantasy world via the role of a character you make. BG3 lets you DO that better than actual D&D5e does because of multiple reasons.

I was discussing this recently! Someone asked "Why is it that so many players don’t deviate from the medieval fantasy genre?" This answer (pic related) was a good beginning of an answer; basically pointing out what you are pointing out. But not WHY that is. I know why that is (continued)

Here's an example, arranged to fit into a nice square here. I'm adamant that TTRPGs must be games for the GM as well; this is how you do it, not by writing a plot. You play this game, and when players take control of factions or form their own, they become players on this stage too.

Legendsmith @legendsmith.bsky.social · 11/09/2023
What's the short version? Set up factions with goals. How? Make factions (or NPC leaders), they have goals. Their goals are at odds with each other. Assign them resources, troops, etc. Roleplay them. You are a GM, this is the side of the game YOU play. I made something to help organise it.

Many TTRPGs should just be supplements for existing systems. Especially ones that are just reskinned D&D. In fairness, the OSR guys at least do this with making their stuff somewhat compatible with each other. It helps because it's an open system. TTRPG is better as a hobby network than industry.

Another day another person saying that if I don't want scripted narrative and fudging rolls in my TTRPGs I actually don't want roleplay and should go play a board game. It's all so tiresome.

Aiming in Lancer is a feat, called a Talent. Sorry, you can't just aim, you need to have the talent to do that. Like how in a CCG, you can't take an action unless you have it in your deck. Fine in a CCG; design butchery for a game that's supposed to be about playing a character in a secondary world.
Rules text that reads the following:
Title: Stable Steady.
As a protocol, you may steady your aim. If you do,
you become IMMOBILIZED until the start of your next
turn but gain +1 on all attacks you make with
RIFLES.
