SROs are often the first rung on the housing ladder in any area. But they are too often missing from local housing markets. A model state bill, the ROOM Act, from @ij.org and @legelawyer.bsky.social would give states a tool to overcome local restrictions.

The Rhode Island ROOM Act, legalizing co-living housing in areas zoned for multifamily, commercial or mixed use, has its first hearing today before the House Municipal Government and Housing committee - and I’m in Providence to testify in support! 🏘️🏗️🏢

Rhode Island has a housing shortage — and we have made some of the most affordable housing options (like co-living or single room occupancy) effectively illegal. Rep. June Speakman’s ROOM Act (H 8036), based on an IJ model, would fix that. 🧵

Six-story single stair reform passed the state senate today, 29 to 2! Everyone please give a huge, huge thank you to Senator @nathanfortexas.bsky.social for his work on this bill and for giving us the chance to bring bigger, better, brighter apartments to all of Texas!

If you think California NIMBYs are insane, you should see Texas NIMBYs. They don't have nearly as much legal power, but their conspiracy theories are on a level California NIMBYs can only dream of.

6 months ago, my @ij.org colleagues and I won the #FirstAmendment retaliatory-arrest case Gonzalez v. Trevino. 2 months ago, we won the follow-on case Murphy v. Schmitt, which #SCOTUS granted, vacated, and remanded in light of Gonzalez. And we’re just getting started.

Life is good in Austin! Developer approaches CM on 120' rezoning. CM says "why not 250?" Developer agrees to a public realm improvements (car-free paseo, money for parks and trails) and bam! More homes, better parks, better trails here we come! www.austinmonitor.com/stories/2024...
“When we met with staff, they said they could only support the 120-feet maximum height because there were no community benefits attached to the PDA (planned development area),” Glasco said. “However, in meeting with Council Member Vela, he told us that he would be in support of a height of 250 feet as long as we worked with the Wooten Neighborhood Plan Contact team and we had their support, so that’s what we’ve been doing.”
