3. Overtime, a wage floor, no more child labor. Before 1938 there was no wage minimum, no overtime, and kids worked 10 to 16 hour days in mills and mines. Years of strikes through the Depression forced the Fair Labor Standards Act, which set all three at once.

1. The weekend In the 1880s most workers were doing 10+ hour days, six days a week. Unions led by the Knights of Labor pushed back, and when the first Labor Day moved to a Monday in 1884, it gave most workers their first two-day weekend.
