I received two DMs about my heron photo: one about NFTs (ignored) and another asking what post-processing I did. In the spirit of full transparency, here’s my step-by-step editing routine! Check out the ALT text for the details and let me know what you think! #birds #birding #photography #heron

This image was originally captured in the late afternoon, about two hours before sunset. I had been following the heron for around 20 minutes as it slowly moved through the water. When it paused here, I waited for the ripples in the water to settle before taking the shot.

As you can see in the original photo, the image is slightly underexposed, and I couldn’t achieve the desired reflection angle without including the branch in the frame.

My editing workflow started with exposure adjustments in Adobe Lightroom. The sequence I follow is: Exposure → Highlights → Shadows → Whites → Blacks.

After that, I used the “heal” brush to remove the branch and cropped the image slightly to tighten the composition and remove debris at the bottom of the frame.

Once the exposure settings were adjusted, I moved on to white balance corrections. I made small tweaks to Temperature, Tint, and Vibrance, while leaving Saturation unchanged. Minor adjustments to Texture and Clarity brought the image to its next stage.

I aimed to preserve the soft, serene tones of the sky and its reflection while enhancing the details in the bird’s reflection. Shooting with an APS-C camera at 145mm and f/5.0 limited the amount of light I could capture, so I used masks for further refinements.

For the final adjustments, I applied two radial masks—one over the bird and another over its reflection. My goal was to recreate the lighting as I remembered it in person. Using these masks, I fine-tuned the exposure settings to subtly enhance the details while maintaining the natural look of the scene.

After completing the mask adjustments, I reviewed the global settings to ensure the colors weren’t oversaturated or blown out.

If you compare this image to the version I originally posted, you may notice slight differences. I had to recreate the edits since the raw adjustments weren’t saved after exporting the JPEG. In the process, I ended up liking this version a bit more.

Every time I see this photo, I hear it yelling: ‘What the **** did you just ****ing say about me, you little *****? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy SEALs…’ Honestly, I think I should apologize to it before it tracks me down. #birds #birding #canon #photography #copypasta

Close-up photo of a small bird, a tufted titmouse, perched on a jagged, weathered tree stump. The bird is tilting its head slightly, giving the impression of an intense, inquisitive, or perhaps angry glare, with a blurred woodland background.

Also, if the post doesn’t make sense, Google Navy Seal copypasta 😂

Absolutely love the small woodpeckers, even if they’re a challenge to capture compared to their larger brethren. Couldn’t think of a better #woodpeckerWednesday post than this Downy, busy hopping from tree to tree! #birds #birding 🪶 #canon #photography #wildlife
