Working for the National Trust on the South Downs, also part of Moor Barton Wilding in Devon, keen on local history and reading. I believe humans can be a positive keystone species and play our part with the more-than-human world. All views my own.

I visited there in 2024 and was blown away by the life to be found there, kayaking while watching Eagles dive bomb prey and song birds everywhere. Is there still limited access for people? A high light was wading barefoot through flood waters to reach a hide and finding wolf prints along the way.

A rather fine Light Crimson Underwing (I think can anyone confirm please?) larva found at Knepp today in the Southern Block, just relaxing on a twig on the path! @kneppwilding.bsky.social @bcsussex.bsky.social

The best @kneppwilding.bsky.social dawn chorus I have maybe heard, ever! Cuckoo, Turtle Dove, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Robin plus of course Nightingale.

I visit this wonderful place a mile south of Knepp once a year after discovering it in 2014 as part of @sussexornitholo.bsky.social Nightingale survey. I approach with trepidation every time in case the scrub has been improved, or cleared for something else. Nightingale gave some subdued song. Phew!

Yes please to a wilder Wales! Thanks also for the nod to Moor Barton, I am very proud and excited to be involved and that it is inspiring others too. Here's a picture of a fantastic inhabitant of Moor Barton from when I was last down there.

The Ringed Plovers are back at East Head, 2 pairs seen with 1 pair observed scraping and displaying. This year we are working with the wonderful @chichesterharbour.bsky.social volunteers helping us to monitor the impacts on the birds from dogs, boats from the offshore anchorage and predators.

A fabulous short walk through Ebernoe Common near Petworth, West Sussex yesterday. Signing Nightingales as soon as you walk through the gate of Furnace Meadow, meandering Ghyll streams, woodland flowers and a feeling of timelessness. Do go if you get a chance @sussexwildlife.bsky.social

We just took down our coppice coupe fencing as 3 years of the hazel regrowth should be enough. #coppicing #positivekeystonespecies

Spending time at Washington Chalk Pits, always giddy with the diversity on show. Adding some adhoc records to #irecord and relishing the tension between shrub, tree and grassland. Burnet Rose in profusion and the reat of the small in scale but big in delight chalk herbs.

The Wood Ants (presuming Formica rufa) enjoying the light and warmth in the regrowing Sweet Chestnut coppice. They follow the coppicing rotation through the woods. #coppice

Not really at work today but fancied a bit of a stroll this evening and hung out amongst the Bluebells and Cowslip in one of our glades.

If you can make it in the next few days the dawn chorus at Knepp is in full voice, the Nightingales are sounding especially wonderful. Thank you @kneppwilding.bsky.social @kneppwildlandfdn.bsky.social

I missed the dancing as had to leave to do the school run and get ready for work. Heres a picture from just after sunrise there this morning.

An early evening walk along a golden Sussex Green Lane. Ancient Oaks, massive Ash Coppice stools, Bluebells and Wood Anemone before coming to the Blackthorn scrub hoping to hear Nightingale and within 2mins as the sun set, 2 signing along with Song Thrush, Blackbird and Robin. What a choir!

A glorious dawn chorus at Ashcombe Bottom near Lewes, a wonderful wood of veteran oaks, hazel coppice diverse scrub and chalk grassland. In the summer you can experience Adonis Blue flying with White Admiral and Silver-washed Fritillaries if you are lucky #woodpasture #chalkgrassland

One of the Junipers at Washington Chalk Pits. A joy of living on the scrape slope of the South Downs is that the snow and ice cling on longer.

It was good to see Sussex Red cattle grazing a lovely chalk grassland site near Washington, West Sussex. Very interesting watching them feed in the snow. This place is a fantastic Local Wildlife Site of Juniper, Wayfaring tree, Round-headed Rampion and Duke of Burgundy amongst many others.
