Quite often yes, it puts the control in the hands of designers. Although I think most implementations are not clean enough to actually be able to change the design with just tokens.

I wish I could do the same thing Cloudflare does for web servers (AI labyrinths + option to pay for access), but with code. I want my code to be accessible for real users, but not mass-scrapable by AI.

Indeed, that's why I only want to persist the value if the user explicitly toggled it. I usually keep a flag for that, if it's false we do listen to system changes.

The debate is whether the simpler UX is worth the fact that resetting the state is more difficult. I feel like as developers, we tend to care a lot, but I am not sure this is a big deal for most users.

Steps: - get user preference through media query, store in state - listen to color scheme changes, update state - if user toggles, update state AND set localStorage - don't listen to color scheme changes if user has manually toggled - on reload, prefer localStorage over media query

I kinda like having only two, system being the default and switching to a preferred one after the first interaction. One click instead of two. The disadvantage is that you need to clear your state if you want to refer back to the system.

Open source is not for personal benefit, ofc, but at the same time we all have rent to pay and even just having the spotlight taken away from something we worked hard on can be really harmful.

At the same time, how can we protect ourselves and the value of our work in these times? 😬 What if I work very hard on a cool project, and someone just steals it (directly or indirectly through training).

I like that take, it's good to continue doing what we believe in. If we don't, in a way it's the same as giving up. It aligns with radical optimism, something I try to live by.

For whatever godforsaken reason I still _care_. The web started as a craft, and still can be. And when it is built as such, it shines. That said, it is increasingly more difficult to live in hope. I don’t blame or fault the people who exit. Unfortunately, this is the only game I know.

TIL WebKit renders SVG filters directly on the CPU. So if you use SVG filters to create effects on your page (like a squiggle effect...), it can massively slow down the responsiveness of your page. Other browsers use GPU acceleration.

Quite tricky on different browsers / pixel densities, seems to be the best with chromium on retina screens, on Safari it seems to create some lag so I might disable it there 😔
