Early Sentiment on Boeing’s Second Offer to SPEEA is Mixed
By Scott Hamilton • Editor at Large  September 21, 2026 Union members' reaction to the second Tentative Agreement (TA) between SPEEA and Boeing is mixed on social media. SPEEA is the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, representing engineers and technicians. Each group has a contract with Boeing, negotiated by SPEEA. The current contract expires October 6. The first TA, endorsed by negotiators on both sides of the bargaining table, was overwhelmingly rejected by both union groups, and both endorsed a strike if they don’t reach a new contract before midnight on October 6.

Aug. 26, 2026, © Leeham News: For nearly 20 years, beginning with the Potemkin-airplane 7-8-07 rollout of the 787, Boeing has stumbled from one miscue after another. The depths to which it bottomed out with the multi-year, multi-failures of the 737 Max program, were extended from March 2019 through mid-2024. Consider: The 787 was 3 ½ years late. It racked up more than $50 billion in deferred production and tooling costs and billions in customer compensation.

Pratt & Whitney betting next-generation narrowbody will be powered by turbofan
By Scott Hamilton July 16, 2026, © Leeham News/AIN: The president of Pratt & Whitney’s commercial engine unit is adamant that the engine powering the successor airplanes to the Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX families will be a turbofan, not an open fan engine. Rick Deurloo’s position is hardly surprising. P&W is developing the NextGen2 Geared Turbo Fan (GTF) engine, which is not an open fan architecture like rival GE Aerospace is pursuing.

Pratt & Whitney expands MROs in push to resolve geared turbofan issues
By Scott Hamilton July 15, 2026, © Leeham News/AIN: Ten years into the seemingly endless technical issues with its Geared TurboFan (GTF) engine, maker Pratt & Whitney’s investments in expanding MRO facilities is a critical component of fixing the engines. P&W has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in building, expanding, and licensing Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities to fix durability problems with key engine components that have plagued the GTF, primarily on the Airbus A320neo family.

Demand appears to support launch of A220 Stretch
Subscription Required By Karl Sinclair and Scott Hamilton July 8, 2026, © Leeham News: Airbus says it hasn’t made the decision yet whether to proceed with a stretch of the A220, but all signs point to doing so. The plane is unofficially called the A200-500 by many, including LNA, based on its original design designation, the CS 500. This is the designation by Bombardier, the designer of the C Series, that became the A220 when Airbus acqured the program in 2018.

Subscription Required By Scott Hamilton July 7, 2026, © Leeham News: Airbus and Pratt & Whitney say that the problems that have ailed the A220 program are resolved and there won’t be any A220s grounded due to geared turbofan engines by the end of this year. Currently, only 2-3% of the grounded A220s are due to the engine problems that have plagued not only the A220, but also the A320neo family.

To our Readers: We've restricted comments for the last seven months, requiring moderation and approval before posting. For the most part, readers behaved. There have been some comments I sent directly to trash. For the month of July, with the Farnborough Air Show coming, I'm reverting to the policy in place from 2008 to December 2025: previously approved readers will be able to post, and their comments will appear within seconds (assuming no technical glitches).
