There is a difference between orbital edge computing and replacing terrestrial hyperscale datacenters. The former is tractable and interesting. The latter faces challenging engineering constraints that need further study.

But near-term use cases are likely application-specific. For example, process data acquired in space from imaging, weather satellites without transferring massive datasets to Earth.

Companies are announcing demonstrators in the next few years, but the challenges compound in subtle ways. For example, a radiator in vacuum differs from a terrestrial cooling tower. It rejects heat via radiation, not convection, requiring surface area and adding launch mass.

Thermal management is counter-intuitive. Space is cold but also a vacuum. No air means no convection. We cannot simply eject heat into space. Massive radiators are needed, which will add to launch mass.

We may see a bifurcation—highly capable frontier models in centralized facilities, efficient customized models at the edge. The question isn't just "can we move inference to the edge?" but "what kind of inference belongs where?"
