Sunday Planning Time! Synch your calendars & check the meal plan. 'Tis the season when colds and flu start to hit. Check your stock of over the counter remedies, tissues, COVID/flu tests, etc., and add any necessary restocks to your shopping list.

Self-Care Saturday! It's about time for Dorm Crud to circulate among our students and get passed to us! Check your stock of cold & flu remedies & restock so you've got them when you need them. (Also, most of the US should be considering a flu shot about now!)

If you want in on the fun, you can get my newsletter of practical tips for busy academics. It's 3x a month. Brief ads for programs are only at the bottom, though special events get their own missive. buff.ly/MuJsTqD No spam, no junk - we're too busy for that!

I am going back through nearly a decade of newsletters sent to clients and others. I've written some pretty good stuff over the years - how a dissertation is like a banana split, comparing writer types to different kinds of planes/pilots, effective sharing of early drafts, and grief in academia.

Hahaha I know! Me either. (I have a TINY bit of bandwidth right now and I'm fighting the urge to take things on so bad ....)

Then slide into an easy task for a SHORT period - 10-15 min. Most of the time you'll keep going beyond that!

If you want something done, ask a busy person to do it. That busy person has a sense of self-efficacy; they see themselves as someone who can get things done, so they do. If you're procrastinating, DO THINGS. Any things. Check them off. Mix some small academic tasks into the list to prime yourself.

The WORST way you can approach busy days or weeks is to just throw yourself into work without a tiny overview of the day. Scattershot jumping around between tasks accomplishes very little while wasting cognitive energy on task-switching. Energy is limited - use it intentionally!

Writing a book can be a solitary process. There's no deadline & no end point. Would dedicated weekly time help you make progress? You can have a calendar event blocking time for your writing, twice a week, for $5/month. Committed coworking time w other academics who are also writing. Accountability

...That's really deep. But it's quite true. Scholarship happens when the two come together. Theory (argument) is what gives facts meaning. I usually remind folks that facts = information, data = systematically gathered info, & evidence = data connected to your argument.
000
Leanne C. Powner @leannecpowner.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Academic prose is driven by its argument. Simply assembling and reporting facts is not, in almost all cases, publishable professional scholarship. Even primarily descriptive scholarship still contains an argument about what you found and why it matters.

Sunday Planning Time! Synch your calendars & check the meal plan. Look ahead if you haven't yet to Halloween. Do you, kids, spouse, dog, etc., need costumes? When are you shopping for those, decorating, or buying candy? Rough in the time (or at least ID the week) so you don't get surprised/rushed!

You the researcher are the expert on your research question. Others' expertise overlaps, but your contribution is unique. Remember this! By the time you're done dissertating, you have enough expertise to stand your own in that space. That's the whole point!

Page output is a shitty measure of academic productivity. Page input (reading), page recycling (draft/memo writing), and a VAST array of other tasks are productive academic activity! Give yourself credit for ALL of your work!

Leanne C. Powner @leannecpowner.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Not all of your writing will make the final draft. The process of thinking, talking, and draft-writing or memoing is necessary for productive scholarly writing sessions. Don't sell them short!

YES!!! Small affordable bits of whimsy and joy are definitely welcome! My purchase this year was a dog poop bag dispenser for the back yard (so painfully practical). No more running in to get a bag, not finding one, etc. Don't know why I waited 13 years to spend $15!

We can -and should - plan for uncertainty that we can foresee. What we can't foresee, however, are unknown unknowns. ALWAYS build in at least 10%, probably more like 20%, for unexpected and unforeseen types of hiccups!

A paper that feels like it's everywhere, mushrooming, or hydra-like often lacks a clear controlling argument that helps the author distinguish data from evidence. Talk with a friend or mentor to help clarify your argument!
