I feel like this is an ad... I personally like to self host my short term Minecraft servers. Used to do it from a vm on the hp proliant dl360 gen 6 machine I wanna retire. Worked fine over a bonded 100mb connection. Could also host from my ryzen 7 5800xt rig... maybe even from wsl lol

I've recently shut down my homelab server and have been looking into alternatives and fewer power-hungry devices that won't dump so much heat into the air. Downside of shutting em down is the ringing in my ears, which has gotten louder and louder lately

But I get why they are more focused on shields, its easier to tweak on their side for balancing, and easier on the players side to upgrade and replace than somehow having a system to make a ship have a thicker hull to reduce ballistic punch through...

While shields should completely stop energy based shots until the shield pool is reduced to zero. CIG should really be looking at upping hull armor on ships based on ship size/wall density. Like a snub/light fighter would have thinner walls than a larger ship/industrial hauler

I really don't think CIG devs understand what they want from shop combat... The ship shields are basically magnetic barriers. They shouldn't be completely stopping ballistic damage. The eddy currents produced while the shot is traveling through the shield should slow down the shot, reducing damage

Most NAS boxes are like $100-400 without drive and sometimes without ram. The last time I looked at a 4tb hdd could run me $200 ish dollars, I haven't looked recently, though. I know I could use the drives in the server, but those are old, 500gb HP drives that seem to hardware lock when formatted...

I could replace that with 3 lower powered, dedicated machines. The 2 easier ones would be getting the home assistant green box, which is about $200, and a raspberry pi 5 for $130-200+ for running the always-on radio service. The expensive one to replace is the data storage, though...

One of the main issues with running my HP Proliant DL360 gen6 is it idles at about 100 watts, under min load for the processes I use its pulling about 300-500 watts. I mainly use it for data backup/project storage, an always-on loop of dmca safe game music, and home assistant.
