Knower of things about Alabama, mass criminalization, fines and fees, healthcare access, capital punishment. Chair of the Praline Matzo Committee. Actively fearful of the Mariana Trench. Spreadsheet person. I will argue with strangers about AEDPA.

This article offers half a dozen reasons why people have stopped having friends and family over, but it ignores the fact that the women who planned parties and kept homes tidy enough for unplanned guests are now working for pay full-time (usually more than 9-5). www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

The dreadful decline of hosting at home: ‘I feel shame any time a friend comes over’
It used to be quite normal to pop next door for a coffee or invite friends over for dinner. But not any more. What’s behind this change – and just how damaging is it?

Two dead because of this system. (Thematically I see early childhood caregiving as an extension of healthcare, though they aren’t the same thing)

Being able to work and also have healthcare needs attended to would be an enormous improvement. God, now I’m thinking of this mother who just the other day died in an Alabama jail where she was bc she left her infant home for 8 hours while she went to work, and the infant died.

A new deal or project 2028 or whatever would have to counter that quickly and visibly. People have work, but the work don’t add up to a living, partly bc of lack of insurance and also lack of leave (even unpaid leave is penalized in some gigs), reliability, etc.

I think people’s openness to MAHA is associated with their experiences health insurance and healthcare. Health insurance really is a scam and without it, healthcare seems like one too. At some point—reached during COVID—a lot of people defaulted to “it’s all a scam”

A lot of poor people had to keep working or couldn’t keep working because of lockdowns. I think everything seems like a scam to some of them. There is so much unprocessed rage and grief. And the same people still can’t get reliable healthcare.

Ghostly Anarchic Squid @leahanelson.bsky.social · 1h
Seems likes you’d need to get a lot of people quick, reliable access to quality healthcare. So much mistrust and misanthropy around healthcare right now, which I see as upstream of MAGA, MAHA, and apathy.

When I say devastating I mean it’s an allegory that really sees the moment America is in. It’s not hopeless - it is literally a prequel to “A New Hope” (to which it is far superior) - but it is such a sober, clear-eyed, and big backstory. Space ships but no magic: Poli Sci Fi.

It was brilliant, astute, and devastating. Easily the best television I’ve ever watched. But also not something I’d recommend until have mental space. I usually stick with predictable/comfort tv and reserve literature for Deep Thoughts/Big Feelings

People who find it demoralizing to know that both parties are pretty bad on certain issues are demoralizing to me, a person who has worked on dozens of death penalty cases in Alabama, but I don’t give up on voting or working to build a better world and I don’t expect them to either.
000
Ghostly Anarchic Squid @leahanelson.bsky.social · 19h
My proposed solution is that we should all insist on its repeal. It should be a major issue people vote on. I’m not saying Dems are the same as Republicans on the death penalty or anything else or that you shouldn’t vote. I’m saying vote and speak up.

Ghostly Anarchic Squid @leahanelson.bsky.social · 19h
AEDPA exists now, people are on death row without review now. It passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and Clinton signed it. There have been no serious efforts to unravel it. This isn’t “Strom Thurmond was a Democrat so lol” bullshit, it’s an egregious law Dems made and haven’t reckoned with.
100
Ghostly Anarchic Squid @leahanelson.bsky.social · 19h
This is true. Dems are better than Republicans on the death penalty at present. At the same time, the nearly 2,000 people on death row in America have Democrats to thank for AEDPA, the 1996 law that precludes meaningful review in federal court even in innocence cases. Both are true.

I also think people hate the idea that they themselves are compromising when they vote, and simultaneously hate the idea that they themselves have agency and can engage beyond posting, and therefore do a lot of belligerent overconfident posting

Yes. And all subject matter expertise is hard-won but I subject matter expertise in death penalty cases that comes from working on them or being in prolonged super close proximity to them is also gut wrenchingly won. It makes overconfident opposition all the more uncool

It’s making me furious bc I have been working on death penalty cases in Alabama for 14 years. Many of which predate AEDPA. People acting like 30 years ago is too long to count when the law Dems made hasn’t changed for the better since then can kick rocks.

You guys death penalty cases last decades. The reason people are talking about AEDPA and Dems’ central role in the modern death penalty is that 30 years ago isn’t a long time. There are people on death row right now whose original cases predated the Clinton-era law that now governs them.

Ok, I did that. Gavin Newsom apparently does have clemency authority and 573 lives he can save, but l can make that point elsewhere without dragging in Shapiro. The death penalty is extremely personal to me, but I will follow my own rules about accurate information.

If I were a larger account, I would issue a correction, but I don’t think I have the kind of influence to where that matters. If you disagree, let me know and I’ll do what I can do mitigate.

There are always ways to improve communication on microblogs. And, living in a state where George Wallace was a Dem until 1968, I am sensitive to the fact that parties change over time. But sone of the ppl who were in power in 1996 still are, and those who are new have not prioritized this issue.

Ghostly Anarchic Squid @leahanelson.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Ok, thank you for that clarification. I live in Alabama, where discretion is exclusively the governor’s and we’ve seen 3 commutations in the last 18 months. I still want to see a lot more noise from Dem standard-bearers, which Shapiro is, but I stand corrected

(I do not think Newsom is a serious person)
000
Ghostly Anarchic Squid @leahanelson.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I appreciate that. I only QT’d you bc I think other folks need to see the answer to the question you asked. Here’s the thing with Newsom: a moratorium is temporary. Basically, that means he won’t authorize executions. But a successor might. A serious person would commute the sentences.
