I wouldn't have liked to go down the same way 🤣 It was a pretty steep hike.

The Way We Came Up. Peak District, September 2026.
Black and white digital photograph. Two rocks in a small cairn formation in the foreground are resting on a boulder overlooking a light, open sky and a view towards distant hilltops in the background. In the middle ground is a path of stamped earth running up between heather-covered and roughly textured rock formations on either hillside.

The silver lining has been using time and £ for my own arts practice instead of fighting for a career where I'd provide public access to someone else's. I have no regrets now but I see stuff like this job ad and still get pissed off 😆

This was my experience with the arts and heritage sector too. Even if I had been willing, I wasn't in a financial position or from a background where I could do that. And that's with being privileged to come from Denmark, where free Uni tuition fees and a stipend is provided.

It is disheartening to realise it's still happening, if anything it's probably even worse by the sounds of it, going on recent reports about wages, work conditions and strikes. I still work in a role adjacent to cultural industries but it's not the museum job I once dreamed of as a graduate.

It was definitely a good thing! I wasn't very well last year and I've had more energy this year, especially the last few months. I've been able to do a lot more of what I enjoy 😄

We all know that someone with existing networks or who's been able to work a low or unpaid job previously is gonna be shortlisted quicker than people who would genuinely benefit from the experience that a trainee position can provide.

I know it's been like this for ages and that this was also a thing a decade ago when I was looking for a postgraduate job but I do despair when I see entry level (see trainee!) roles listed like this:

More random questions: Japanese speakers, can 一緒 or 一緒に stand alone to mean "together" or does it have to be connected to other characters to have meaning?

What a beautiful tunnel of trees!

From a walk/hike yesterday, probably my favourite place in our woodland. I never know what to call this route I've built, which goes up and down the valley several times and then at the final stretch before looping back home, opens up to this view at the top.
Colour phone photograph of a small opening between thickly growing trees and bushes that reveal a view of bright blue sea and sky. In the top right corner, lens flare is visible from sunlight filtering through the foliage of a tree's canopy. Colour phone photograph of a shaded twisting tree trunk and a small clearing in a woodland with a chunky wooden seat that looks out on a view of bright blue sea and sky inbetween trees and bushes growing on three sides.

I am thankfully! Doing good and was able to go on one of my regular short hiking routes yesterday, preparing for all the walking in Japan!

I'm glad they get to be with you for a bit longer! This might be a silly question but would you be able to adopt them if you wished?

I keep coming back to have another look at this one, I really like the light and shape of the landscape.

I agree, it makes such a difference. Unpacking and shelving books were one of the first things we did when we moved.

It does depend on circumstances although I've also found that tweaks and "temporary" half-solutions can sometimes be made that can make a difference too, similar to what you did. For me, it was cutting work with 3 hrs weekly at the beginning of this year, it's helped a lot!

I hope you still have a chance to do some! Fall seems to be running a little late here in South East England, if it's the same where you are, there might be hope yet.

This, alongside Brexit and the push for AI use everywhere, means it's now almost impossible for a lot of creators, makers and small companies to secure income streams incl. from post-fulfilled sales. It's so sad. I know I'm not buying from EU and other places because it's prohibitively expensive.

I was considering the same thing a week ago, taking a temporary break from Bluesky (and the news!). Then some people on here reminded me there is still kindness and connection in the world too, so I'm remaining for now. It's grim out there, whatever you do, I hope it helps even a little.

Not long now. Somewhere in Kyoto, November 2024. .
Digital colour photograph of stone steps leading up towards a stone gate and into a Buddhist Temple nestled in dark shade behind a stone pillar fence at the top.
It's a sunny day and orange autumn leaves have fallen onto the path, which has a lace-like pattern of light and shadow with a silhouette from a large, nearby tree leading the way going up. On and around the steps, natural vegetation has creeped in and is slowly taking over.

A decision has been made in our household not to watch Traitors yet, as we'll be missing half the episodes and catching up in Mid-Nov 🥲 Avoiding spoilers is gonna be a minefield, so I've muted some words. Wish us luck.

That's my experience too after 3 years with the Ricoh, especially as I go to more landscape-type places when I travel these days and could use a wider one.

If money was no objection I would have gotten the Ricoh GR III as well to have both focal lengths, so I get why you'd be looking at both, especially with the mono as well.

Thank you for asking her! I hadn't realised the figurines originated in Kansai, we'll be in Kansai for half the trip so hopefully we'll be able to find one.

Are they turning early this year or is this standard? When we were in Kyoto in 2024 the leaves were turning late, so I don't know what to expect this year 😄

People in Japan, where does one buy a Tanuki figurine? Tiny to medium sized, the kind that can fit in a suitcase.

Thanks Alfie! At least it's happening now after our Peak District trip but before Japan. Using the down time to the boring task of organising photo folders, which I've been meaning to do for ages, so it's not all bad.

Thank you Paula x I have a friend who has had it real rough and my partner has colleagues with it too. The timing for being ill is never good but I'm glad it wasn't last week when we were on our hiking trip!
