This is absolutely the case. Re. my thread the other day, one thing romance haters rarely engage with is romance as a literature of hope, joy and recognition for marginalised groups. I am old and I didn't happy queer representation before I read queer romance.

Many people who I knew at Oxford shared this mentality. The idea that wealth and privilege are a reward for hard work and talent, and that being low income/ working class /from a deprived background was a choice.

Section 28 in the UK was brought in to "prohibit the promotion of homosexuality" by local authorities. "Promotion" was not defined, which led to a widespread chilling effect over even mentioning the existence of queerness. Funny how alike "encourage" and "promote" are in this context, isn't it?
