With London's incredible density delivering new infrastructure projects can be the wicked-est of wicked problems. We've built the Infrastructure Mapping Application to help speed up projects and reduce costs. Read on: data.london.gov.uk/blog/data-as...
"A set of six impact metrics, each represented by an icon and a corresponding value. The first metric, represented by a calendar icon, shows 'Collaborative Days Saved' as 1,323. The second, with a piggy bank icon, indicates 'Costs Saved by Collaborators' at £2.16 million. The third, shown with a house icon, represents 'Increase in Resident Wellbeing' valued at £7.23 million. The fourth, with a bus icon, measures 'Journey Time Saved' at 267,000 hours, equating to £2.02 million. The fifth, another piggy bank icon, denotes 'Business Losses Avoided' at £1.15 million. The final metric, represented by a green leaf icon, shows 'Carbon Saved: Reduced Trips' at 66 tonnes of CO₂.

Nearly two-thirds of London’s CO2 emissions come from buildings, with domestic buildings account for 32% of emissions. Identifying which buildings would benefit from retrofit is tricky, but luckily machine learning can help. Enter the London Building Stock Model 2: data.london.gov.uk/blog/london-...

📈 Safestats enables community safety staff to spot crime patterns, especially for underreported issues. This data drives #publichealth prevention strategies, not just enforcement and shapes London's Police & Crime Plan, informs local strategies & helps allocate resources where needed most 4/4

🔍 Another behind-the-scenes (& longest-running) #city data service in #London is the @london.gov.uk Safestats platform, which brings together #crime #data from police, ambulance, fire brigade & NHS - creating a comprehensive view of community safety across the city 🧵 1/4

4/5 🏘️ LAND4LDN's Land Supply Manager creates a big picture of London's development potential by weaving together multiple data streams: live planning data, borough allocations, approved site submissions, & constraint mapping - showing where and how London can grow

3/5 🔄 Two core modules power LAND4LND - the Call for Sites Manager submission service enables developers/landowners/members of the public to plot sites & submit them for consideration along with supporting information, these are then are pulled through directly into the LAND4LDN platform.

1/5 One of London's data strengths is in urban/city planning: so, another behind-the-scenes city #data service focuses on where we can build new #housing in #London - it's called LAND4LDN and replaces fixed-point-in-time snapshots with much more useful real-time feeds 🧵

4/4 This is transforming how London grows. The data feeds directly into #city #infrastructure planning, #housing strategies & demographic forecasting. There are a bunch of data services which have spun off from this, like: identifying available land, understanding high street economies [more soon]

3/4 Because of the Datahub we can now see, in one place: 📋 Live planning applications 💻 Connected council systems 🏗️ Starts/completions updates This is all #opendata: whether you're a developer, researcher or just curious about your neighbourhood, anyone can access this data #cities

5/6 ✨ The result? GoogleMaps now shows you: 🤫 Quieter, low-traffic streets 🚚 Detailed breakdowns of cycle lanes vs roads 🧊 #3D preview of your whole route 🗺️ #Real-time traffic updates These changes improve more than 60 million cycling journeys across London and are available globally for adoption

2/6 🤔 Problem statement: navigation apps pretty much catered for #cars not #cyclists.  In effect: cyclists were being directed to busy, high-traffic routes & there wasn't a way to easily choose a journey using the city's 340 km of cycleways either!

More behind-the-scenes #London #smartcity #data #innovation: Tired of repeated roadworks on the same street? 50+ utilities & councils now share data to coordinate infrastructure digs across city thru the Infrastructure Mapping Application. Result? Less disruption & better future planning #growth 🧵

🔍 BEFORE: Working on assumptions & hunches based on single datasets. AFTER: Hard data revealing who needs help & why. By connecting Housing Options data with rough sleeping insights, we're busting myths & building solutions that work better.

🔄 Together with partners like LOTI, London Councils & Faculty AI and Beam we brought together homelessness data from CHAIN, In-Form provider systems, and borough H-CLIC returns into one powerful strategic tool: breaking down data silos to help support our most vulnerable residents

Another example of how #data is working behind-the-scenes to improve Londoners' lives. We want to make #roughsleeping rare, brief and non-recurrent in #London but crucial data has been held across many orgs in the city. So we set about changing this with a new tool, here's how🧵

🏗️ Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how London government is using city #data to serve citizens better. With no national service available, we built a dashboard combining open & secure data to help planners put #ElectricVehicles #EV chargers where needed most. A #LocalGov🧵...

We can't aspire to be a smarter city, or a true leader in #AI unless we also ensure there is proper digital inclusion - so it was great to be honoured by peers who see it the same way in Barcelona earlier this month. Find out more here loti.london/get-online-l...

For three years in a row, we've also brought together digital inclusion practitioners from councils, community groups, organisations like Age UK London & the private sector so we can share what works, solve common problems & design solutions to serve citizens better

Thousands of SIMs donated by telcos to the Data Bank are distributed through hundreds community hubs. Basic digital skills are taught using Learn My Way: over 10k Londoners have taken the programme, in addition to the 30k+ learning at their local college funded by City Hall

Transport for London also helps schools across the capital save money by donating more than 800 laptops, iPads and computers to help children learn. The programme has so far helped 38 London schools - like Clockhouse Primary School in Romford

We worked with councils & public bodies like the Met Police to refurbish 5k end-of-business life laptops to distribute to those in need. This is also good for the environment because it diverts these laptops from landfill, saving 7m tonnes of CO2e emissions

So City Hall teamed up with LOTI and Good Things Foundation to test a wrap-around offer here in London (to be be scaled nationally) to support existing initiatives & help people get access to the skills, SIM cards or device they need to get online. And we've made a difference!

During the pandemic we knew of many #digitalinclusion projects across the city - run from libraries/council services, community groups or via corporate giving. But we saw they often only dealt with aspects of exclusion, so what if we designed inclusion as a citywide service?

Get Online London, funded by the Mayor of London, is helping tens of thousands of Londoners access the internet. Last week GOL won Barcelona Smart City Expo award for citywide access to digital skills, connectivity & devices. Our approach to #digitalinclusion works like this🧵
