He did NOT gain tenure. He was in a tenure track position but he did not have tenure. And he had little scholarly work to justify tenure.

He Picked a Fight With Black America. I’m Here to Finish It.
Liberals keep reaching out asking me to read Tyler Austin Harper. Not one liberal. Not one conversation. It has happened enough the past few days that I have started wondering why. Why has Tyler become the Black writer some liberals want Black intellectuals to read? Why are these particular essays, the ones questioning DEI, affirmative action, anti-racism, and the legitimacy of how Black scholars enter elite institutions, the essays that keep getting passed along?

My son doesn’t know but suspected gripes. He loved his yrs at Bates but recognizes flaws as a PWI. Also a rocky time in academia - COVID years (2020-2024). Lots of resignations and new hires incl. a new pres in ‘23 (good change). As a student employee, my son had gripes with admin as well.

I hope this piece gets the attention it deserves. My son was a student of Professor Baker’s at Bates and said he was excellent. I just shared this with him.

You clearly do not understand the depth of pain that people have felt when they die by suicide. They often see this as the ONLY way to HELP their families. Your comment is unnecessary and unhelpful.

My kid had more than one excellent Black professor at Bates and none of them were TAH.

We live in Baltimore so the grit of Lewiston didn’t come as a shock (it appealed to my kid in some ways). He worked w/a prof and other students on a history of immigration to Lewiston which included interviewing immigrants. That had a major impact on him.

I think it is quite clear, for anyone not being obtuse, to understand what I think this piece is. That said, you can take what you want from what I’ve said.

He was so repelled by the social justice parenting in “ritzy” Maine that I feel certain he left asap. www.nytimes.com/2023/09/24/o... And having spent time in Lewiston (my kid is a 2024 grad), I laugh at the idea of it being called ritzy.

I can’t help feeling that as American culture has become more racially progressive, it’s also become more pathological about race.

It's extremely revealing that one of Harper's main takeaways from the tenure track as a Black professor was to become singularly suspicious of his Black colleagues' qualifications (and his own) rather than, say, at all interested in the existence of racism and white/male mediocrity within academia.

The author is a man who was bothered in a “visceral” way by seeing black Barbie dolls in a family’s home when he first moved to Maine (see NYT article). It must be social justice parenting! Perhaps TAH is a bit dramatic.

As a subscriber I’m embarrassed to admit that I spent the time reading this piece. It is hardly a must read. The author comes off as smug and demeaning of his former colleagues and other candidates. When did the Atlantic start publishing personal grudge pieces?

I love this. I have a 20 y.o. son, too. A friend of his visited recently and I heard them talking about relationships and how they were trying to be more introspective about being a good partner following a break up and my mom heart nearly exploded with love.

Yes, this is it. I dread the day that I have to take my mom’s keys away - it will be ugly. She’s 82 and just got a new car. I know getting my husband to ever give up his car keys will be a nightmare. He loves to drive and I don’t see that changing.

We now know the Iran war price tag is more like $50 billion - hundreds of dollars per household - and counting. It's enough to cover all the health insurance premium credits that the Republicans got rid of for this year, and next. It could save rural hospitals, pay teachers, fix roads.

I keep coming back to this.
66 Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews, but out of a hope for restored patriotism, or a sense of economic anxiety, or a hope to preserve their religious values, or dislike of their opponents, or raw political opportunism, or convenience, or ignorance, or greed.
That word is "Nazi." Nobody cares about their motives anymore.
They joined what they joined. They lent their support and their moral approval.
And, in so doing, they bound themselves to everything that came after. Who cares any more what particular knot they used in the binding?

And they are adding a lot of new programming too. We just had a week a teen-focused events for when the kids were out on spring break. Again, we still have problems but our current mayor has really focused on young people and the entire city benefits because of it.

We still have a lot of issues in Baltimore but our mayor, Brandon Scott, has done a great job renovating and building rec centers, playgrounds and pools. We are a fraction of the size of Chicago but the challenge is the same - give kids a place to go. www.wmar2news.com/news/region/...

I knew Bates was a stopover when I read this in the NYT. Clearly wasn’t house hunting in Lewiston (Bates’ town) which is anything but an “upwardly mobile suburb.” Maine still offered a convenient narrative for his edgy thoughts. Over before it started. Gritty Lewiston would never satisfy his ego.

Very true. He was at Bates, wrote a few shitty pieces that I cannot even find online anymore and then he was quietly gone. I wonder if it didn’t have something to do with the change in leadership at Bates. New president quite different (in a good way).

As the parent of a kid who was at Bates while he was there, I agree. But I am also grateful that Bates was clearly not the place for TAH. Something made the school undesirable to him and that’s redeeming to me. Not sure why he was quietly gone but Bates is better for it.

Yes, understood and agree. I appreciate the response. Just don’t like to see a good school - that actually doesn’t have a huge endowment compared to its peers and is in Lewiston, Maine, a place that many people don’t even want to drive through - further tainted by TAH.

He taught at Bates (briefly). I only know this bc he was a prof when my kid was there and he wrote some really shitty other pieces during that time. Not sure when or why he left but please don’t assume anything about Bates based on this guy. He’s had a chip on his shoulder for a while, unknown why.
