Excellent reminder. I once had a convo with a teacher who was resistant to accommodate her assessment. I asked her to define what she was truly “assessing”. Was it the students’ knowledge of content, how she could better plan/design instruction or the format of the test? She needed time to reflect.

I do understand that but for individuals who may find difficulty in organizing their ideas or in their ability to generate descriptive language, AI tools give them a starting point of ways to describe the information they’re sharing.

To answer, often (not always) tech companies view accessibility as an afterthought & not with forethought in their design, reinforcing why we need to do our due diligence to include all individuals whenever and however we can. Alt text is a simple enough place to start this.

I think anytime you’re using AI you have to use your own judgement to discern what is relevant and what is not. The best way to provide alt text for images is to be concise, descriptive, and informative, focusing on the image's key content & function.
