ALICE collaboration at CERN just cracked how light atomic nuclei survive the LHC's scorching fireball. Turns out nuclei form after the initial collision via nuclear fusion in a cooler environment - key finding to better model light-nuclei creation and interpret signals in the search for dark matter.
