Nuclear physicist, bay area resident, veteran. PhD UC Berkeley. Opinions my own, unless they're bad. No, even then I suppose.

The Nobel always reminds me of someone robbed of one: Lise Meitner. I've always found her inspiring. Not just for discovering fission, not just for being a Jewish woman in science in WW2, but because of her staunch opposition to helping build an atomic bomb. 🧪 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lise_Me...

on one hand I can reduce my data, on the OTHER hand maybe I can train a fruit fly brain to reduce my data 🧪

To look for element 120 we're building a Californium target, which is way too hot to handle. Check out how Rohan is using a robot to assemble our radioactive pizza here. 🍕🧪

Mission briefing! 🚨 We're building a super radioactive target to make the new element E120, and we need a hero! Introducing DRAGONS, the robot Rohan is training for the job. Watch the discovery unfold! 💪💥🧪 #Robots #MakingScienceHappen #NewElements #NuclearScience #PeriodicTable

One of the things I love about working at @berkeleylab.lbl.gov is that if I'm ever feeling young and spry I can walk to work through campus and then I feel accurately old and tired

A particle made of force? Chinese researchers claim they've definitively detected a "glueball"--a particle of bound gluons, which carry the strong force. Gluons bind together protons & neutrons, but they can also stick to each other. No ordinary matter required. 🧪 www.science.org/content/arti...
The Beijing Spectrometer III has provided evidence for glueballs, which are made almost entirely of force-carrying particles.

Why would they build a cyclotron way up on a hill?! Oh ok nevermind I get it. 🧪
The view from the 88" cyclotron at Berkeley Lab. Some clouds and fog hang over the san francisco bay area seen from a high elevation. The campanille of Berkeley is to the left, a tree to the right. The bay runs through the middle of the picture with san francisco, the golden gate bridge is visible in the distant right. It is early in the morning, and I think conveys a feeling of coolness, beauty, and scale.

I'm convinced GRETA is the most satisfying arrangement of germanium detectors humanity has created. It was very not-satisfying to help run the cables for them though. 🧪

The lab decided "PEP" is the best term for our yearly goal setting because I guess they don't have the trauma of being in the startup/tech sector.

When scientists identify that a published paper may be wrong, that is science succeeding not failing. Peer review is helpful but imperfect.

The 88-inch Cyclotron at LBNL is still looking good after 65 years. @lbnlnuclearsci.bsky.social 🧪
Top: a sepia colored picture of the cyclotron building in 1961. A low office building is in front of a larger square high bay. The building is up in the hills of Berkeley with cars parked outside.

Bottom: a color modern photo. The low office building is now two stories, there are large trees growing out front now.

Can the 88-Inch Cyclotron Save the Periodic Table? – Nuclear Science Division
