Many congratulations to Anne Carson for the well-deserved Nobel Prize! This is also great news for Translation, Classics, Poetry, the breaking of generic and disciplinary boundaries, and the fact that you don't have to fit a pre-existing mould to have a brilliant, successful career.

Very good news regarding the Nobel Prize in Literature - the Canadian author Anne Carson is one of my favourite poets! Here from her book “If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho” "stars around the beautiful moon hide back their luminous form whenever all full she shines on the earth silvery"

Back at LNGS and in L’Aquila. Beautiful autumn colors. Everyone in the city is curious about the Nobel Prize for neutrinos, and I do my best to explain it in Italian ;-)

The 2026 Physics Nobel Prize to Francis Halzen is well deserved! I wrote the attached explainer for the public from the perspective of someone who has worked in this field and known Francis for decades. I welcome helping sharing it. Congratulations to Francis and all! medium.com/@beacom.7/ho...

Finally, needless to say, I am also very happy for neutrino physics today. To me, neutrinos are both difficult and endlessly fascinating. There are still so many open questions that we are trying to answer by observing the elusive neutrinos :-)

Also, part of what makes today so special is the fact that the prize recognises not only a major discovery, but also the vision, persistence and courage needed to build such a large detector, and to create an entirely new way of observing the universe.

I have known Francis for many years, and I am genuinely happy for him. His modesty and his excitement about physics is inspiring not only to me, but to many young, aspiring neutrino and astroparticle physicists.

IceCube has clearly changed the way we look at the universe. For the first time, we can use high-energy neutrinos to trace some of the most extreme cosmic environments and to get closer to answering the century-old question of where cosmic rays come from.

Francis, a wonderful human and colleague, had the vision to pursue an idea that was incredibly ambitious: to use a cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice as a telescope for neutrinos! And he didn’t give up until that idea became reality.

I am so happy today for Francis Halzen and for the IceCube collaboration. The Nobel Prize for Francis, for IceCube, and for high-energy neutrino astronomy is very special for me, both scientifically and personally.

It’s difficult to follow #ZFF given the recent start of the autumn semester. But it was so inspiring to listen to Naomi Watts yesterday, who very emotionally talked about her career at ZFF Masters, including her breakthrough with Mulholland Drive in 2001

XENONnT: First Measurement of Low-Energy Solar Neutrinos Scattering off Electrons scnat.ch/en/id/bA7dW

Laura Baudis @lbaudis.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
With XENONnT we observed solar pp neutrinos via neutrino-electron scattering. With an exposure of 2.46 t x y and electron recoil energies from 1 keV to 140 keV (probing neutrinos with energies down to 17 keV) the measured flux is (10.2±2.0)x10^10 cm^-2 s^-1. Read more at: arxiv.org/abs/2608.29450
The solar pp flux estimated from the inference results. Top: The best-fit result is shown as a solid red point. Also plotted are results from combining GALLEX/GNO and SAGE, Borexino, and PandaX-4T. The prediction from the B16-GS98 solar model is indicated by a vertical grey dashed line. Bottom: Log likelihood ratio as a function of the solar pp-flux. Dashed lines indicate different significance levels.

5) Important to believe in experimental data without any bias 6) Interactions between theoretical and experimental physicists are very important 7) Sometimes basic research takes time (lesson for funding agencies!)

The most relevant lessons: 1) Crazy ideas are important 2) Kamiokande started as proton-decay experiment, then observed solar and later also SN neutrinos 3) Expertise from two collaborations was needed for the success of Super-K 4) The background (neutrinos) became an important signal for Super-K

This is a good write up of the Nature anisotropy paper debacle. But while Sawala is right that it's unfair to the referees to expect them to have caught the big "elemental" mistake in the paper, he's also being very generous - there is another important error that the referees *should* have caught.

New paper in PRC: with data from XENONnT, we measured the 214-Bi β-decay spectrum to the ground state of 214-Po, a first-forbidden non unique decay. The prediction based on the conserved vector current (CVC) hypothesis yields the best description of the data: journals.aps.org/prc/abstract...
Decay scheme of 214Bi to 214Po and subsequently to
210Pb. The diagram shows β-decays from 214Bi (left) either directly
to the ground state (g.s.) or via excited states of 214Po (center).
Approximately 80 excited nuclear states are accessible during the
decay (symbolically represented). All these excited states deexcite
via γ-decay emissions (red arrows), always including at least one
transition greater than 609 keV. The final step is the α decay of 214Po
(black arrow) directly to the stable ground state of 210Pb (right).Comparison of the experimental data from XENONnT with the CVC theoretical spectrum (filled histogram).
