Young people can be disabled. Disabilities can fluctuate. Someone using a cane one day and not using it the next is not evidence that they’re faking anything, or of social contagion. And seeing more young disabled people in public or online is not evidence that disability has suddenly become trendy

And why do I, on VERY rare occasions, use a cane? Because mobility aids aren’t exclusively for people who physically can’t walk without them. For some people they’re used for stability. For others they’re used bc sometimes walking can be painful. In my case: it’s bc my hip fucking hurts, Kathleen.

And excessive mobility can cause instability and injury. Joint instability is why I rolled my left ankle so many times that the ligament became permanently stretched out and I needed surgery to tighten it.

Before you decide I’m out of shape, I do Pilates twice a week, you absolute walnut. Re hypermobility: in what world is joint hypermobility nonspecific?! IT’S IN THE NAME. My joints are literally more mobile than they’re supposed to be. Joint range of motion is physically observable and measurable.

You can literally watch it happen on a heart-rate monitor. Sometimes my vision tunnels or goes black for a few seconds. That’s why my cardiologist was able to diagnose me easily, and put me on meds that lower my heart rate. They manage it really well.

Okay, I finally read the disability piece. Jfc. Kathleen, even the TINIEST bit of research could have told you that the symptoms of the conditions you list are not actually “vague.” Re POTS: my heart rate skyrocketing when I go from sitting to standing is not subjective.

Fun fact: it doesn’t happen often, but sometimes I paint these pieces twice. The first one will fail only slightly, but I know how I need to do it right the second time. Sometimes they don’t work at all. This style is a weird process that can be extremely forgiving and extremely unforgiving.
