My first op-ed with the Deseret News is out today: "The state constitutions were never intended to be miniature, less-important versions of the federal document. They are and have always been independent expressions of fundamental law and American self-government." www.deseret.com/opinion/2026...

Opinion: State constitutions — the forgotten guardians of our rights
State constitutions are and have always been independent expressions of fundamental law and American self-government.

'...fading memories are not the only danger [to a nation]. The distortion of historical facts—retellings that reimagine and repurpose past events to lend credence to misbegotten aims—may be an even greater threat.' - Excellent quote from Ketanji Brown Jackson's concurring opinion, Trump v. Barbara.

Thank you to the Bavarian American Academy for allowing me to participate in this year’s Emerging Scholars’ Forum. It was a great opportunity to connect with the American studies community in Germany and to discuss some of the most pressing challenges to our constitutional order.

I spent a few days in Cambridge for a workshop on Reimagining Democracy. I’m leaving this beautiful city thinking about the semantic frameworks we use and have used to talk about democracy and political rights, associational life, and the ‘social question’ of constitutions.

I was so busy with reading I forgot to mention that I started my PhD at @ox.ac.uk. Is there anything else to say about constitutions? I’ll let you know in about three years.

Could parliamentary procedure be so complex that it confuses even those in power? This intriguing paper by @laurenjarnach.bsky.social (shameless promotion for my wife's work) delves into the vital role of parliamentary procedure in democratic outcomes. lawandhistoryreview.org/article/laur...
