Ontario NDP Leader Announces Plan to End Encampments and Tackle Homelessness

After seven long years, Doug Ford’s legacy is encampments in every single town and city in our province.

Seeing tents in parks is a stark reminder of how utterly Ford has failed Ontario – on housing, health care, creating good jobs, and making life more affordable.

As Premier, I will end chronic homelessness and make encampments a thing of the past.

We will take a housing-first approach, put a roof over people’s heads, and connect them with the supports they need.

✅ Build 60,000 supportive housing units: safe, permanent homes with wraparound supports like mental health care and addiction treatment.

✅ Upload shelter funding to the province: cities shouldn’t be left scrambling to fund shelters while Ford hoards money.

✅ Expand housing benefits: moving people out of shelters into homes, freeing up shelter space, and helping more Ontarians get back on their feet.

✅ Prevent homelessness before it happens: protect renters, stop illegal evictions, and double social assistance so more people can afford to stay in their homes.
