I knew the chocolate industry was bad on the growers’ side—I didn’t realize it was this bad on the output side, too.

The forecast for Hurricane Isaias seems pretty much on target with earlier expectations, but we take a deeper dive in. Plus, we sample the rain and wind risks from Rachel and Simon in the Southwest U.S. this weekend and next week. Details below or at theeyewall.com.

Family lore: Sweet potato pie was my grandfather’s favorite—and when my mom was pregnant with me, she was making one to introduce it to my dad when she went into labor and she refused to go to the hospital until it was done. :) They are really good.

This is cool and helps explain the zipper waves (that’s what I call them!) that you see on the gulf side of the island, zipping along almost parallel to the shore until they run out of room.

Houstonians: Key Map book in car at all times! But I do think we were better at navigating because we had to be more attentive. I memorized the order of streets in downtown Houston as a kid. My mom taught me to navigate “old Houston style” to get around traffic. Of course now Google does that, too.

Several weeks ago, Phil Tippett's legendary animation studio in Berkeley, CA closed. An anonymous hero noticed a folder of CDs. This turned out to be hundreds of unseen hi-res images and videos from Star Wars, Robocop, Jurassic Park, etc. ~90 isos for you to browse: archive.org/details/tipp...
A casual Star Wars alien fella at the cantina, in a sun faded, reddish photo. Someone will be mad at me for not knowing who this is. Phil, a balding Caucasian man, poses a model of the garthok, an antagonist from the Coneheads movie.Phil, a balding caucasian man, points at some CG on a CRT computer monitor, as a younger man looks on. The screen shows a model of a dinosaur attacking a jeep, while there's an actual physical model of that event in the foreground for reference.an isolated shot of a star wars vehicle. Sorry, I don't know star wars lol

My husband was diagnosed in his 30s but should have been diagnosed in his teens (or earlier). His parents saw bad behavior instead of struggle (“You’re smart so you must be choosing not to work”) and went to a Christian family therapist rather than a psychiatrist. He’s accepted this better than I.

This was absolutely our experience. One kid hit the wall in 7th grade. The other kid insisted he was fine until 9th grade when just he wasn’t. But we can trace their experiences of liking/not liking, “not being able to do,” or feeling stressed about certain things back to kindergarten.

Use alt text on your images. USE ALT TEXT ON YOUR IMAGES. If you post with an image, that image has VALUE. Information! It's important. Share with the whole class, or just go sit in the corner. (The culture here is to give a shit. Even if you don't understand the why, alt text takes 10 seconds.)

I had this exact response. I remember my husband being a little bewildered when I was in tears days later and explaining: he’s taking us into war. What I remember most vividly is how clear eyed my 19-20 year old students were. “There’s going to be a war, and it’s not going to be short,” one said.

When my MIL died and we got her house ready for an estate sale, we realized every room had at least one table. EVERY table had a tissue box and a drawer. EVERY drawer had a notepad, pen, magnifying glass, scissors, and nail clippers. Coming from a junk drawer house, I found it inspiring.

Excellent point - yes, and the failure to mourn according to unattainable class standards would have been seen as (further) evidence of the “animal” quality of working class people. @brewminate.bsky.social did a long post on death culture recently. I know someone has written on class implications!
