Everything’s Going Wrong for NYC’s Adams in Bid for Reelection
In July, New York City Mayor Eric Adams was predicting that by this point in his race for reelection, he’d be proving his doubters wrong, surging in the polls.

If Cuomo makes an active run in the general election, I wanted to get a clearer picture of how much he lost support from his base since the last time he ran in NYC (2018 primary vs Nixon) & how much Mamdani ate into that base. Maps below now use same layout, color scheme, & ranges.
2025 NYC mayoral first round results (w/same color scheme and layout as adjacent 2018 map)2018 governor primary results in NYC (w/same color scheme and layout as adjacent 2025 map)

First post-Dem primary poll by Honan Strategy Group of 817 likely voters: If Cuomo runs as an independent, he is tied with Mamdani 39-39. Cuomo leads 44-40 if Adams drops out. Mamdani leads Adams 46-31 if Cuomo is out.

If Cuomo becomes mayor, there is a fair chance he runs for president in 2028. Even if he doesn't, his victory will be seen as a sign that Dems prefer experienced moderates to younger progressives. As @lauranahmias.bsky.social writes: www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...
Those distinctions strike at the heart of not just the New York mayoral race, but also the future of the American Democratic party. After Kamala Harris’ loss in the 2024 presidential election to Trump, Democrats have been convulsed by debate and indecision over how best to regain their mojo with voters. Superstar congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has endorsed Mamdani, is in a camp that believes populist economic policies and progressive cultural ideas channeled via young candidates is the way forward. The other cohort, including older members of the party establishment, is of the view that a more centrist approach will prove the winning strategy.

Ridership is a big concern for transit agencies in terms of their ability to raise funds from fares. But one thing that's been exciting to watch is that while many agencies, like DC's WMATA, have lower ridership on weekdays than they did pre-pandemic, they now have higher ridership on weekends!
