I’m not a guy who blames the zebras for the outcome of a game often, but 7 fouls in 40 minutes and 1 in the last 20 is laughable

I love tip 9. Writing is so much better as a social activity! A 5 minute conversation with a writing partner can save me an hour of spinning my wheels. The other tip I would add is to start writing at the beginning of the research process not the end because writing = thinking.

The last chapter of my dissertation, Consequences of dam removal for reservoir carbon storage and emissions, is finally out! We modeled emissions and burial before, during, and after the removal of three focal dams to evaluate the net impact of removal on C balance. (1/5) doi.org/10.1016/j.je...
A diagram illustrating carbon emissions and storage before, during, and after dam removal. In the before period, there is a diagram of a dam and reservoir with one bidirectional arrow called "water surface gas exchange" and one arrow pointing toward the sediments called "burial." In the burp diagram, there are three arrows pointing upward: exposed sediment emissions, drawdown ebullition, and eroded sediment emissions. in the after diagram, there is one arrow pointing toward the soil to indicate sequestration called net ecosystem production and there are three bidirectional arrows: tree CH4 flux, soil CH4 flux, and water surface gas exchange.

Excited to finally share our work evaluating prior efforts, publicly available data, and tools to evaluate the effects of agricultural conservation on water quality outcomes in the United States. Our key recommendations are summarized in the graphic below. doi.org/10.1002/jeq2...
An infographic of take homes from Naslund et al. 2025. Title: Advancing assessment of the impacts of agricultural conservation on water quality at regional and national scales. 1) Leverage existing agricultural conservation practices datasets by harmonizing reporting across programs. 2) Survey conservation practice implementation and maintenance after contract initiation, 3) Employ methods of data sharing that leverage information from individual records without infringing on privacy protections, 4) Develop studies of producer and macroeconomic behavior, 5) Separate practice efficacy assessments by nutrient (N vs. P) form (particulate vs. dissolved and species), and loss pathways, 6) Evaluate practice performance over time and over a range of environmental conditions, including climate factors, 7) Develop fit-for-purpose water quality data and strategically enhance existing water quality datasets, 8) Develop data on other water quality drivers, particularly nutrient inputs and legacies, and their representation in mechanistic models.

Spent the evening with 38 other nerds learning about how my local government works from highly competent and passionate town managers. The first of 14 sessions. An excellent salve for the torrent of bad news at the state and federal level.

I was talking to a post-doc who works with me about this. She said "I did my PhD during a pandemic, now I am starting a post-doc and science is being defunded, maybe it's a sign I need to do something else with my life" She is a brilliant scientist, science needs her! www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Well, that was an absurd game in every way. Puking. Fainting. Kon Knueppel grabbing Tyrese Proctor's leg to keep him inbounds. And of course, Cooper Flagg saving the day. Been tough sledding the last two games, but the Blue Devils are halfway to an unbeaten ACC schedule.

Cooper Flagg has 42 points. Most by a Duke player since 1988. Most points at Cameron since 1976. Most points by a freshman in Duke history.
