I’m proud of the work Scratch is doing, but the candor and generosity with which our interviewees have spoken might be the thing that’s moved me most these last six months. www.talkscratch.com/the-scratch-...
A screenshot from the link in the quoted post that reads:

“Something I want to make sure I say is part of how we artists survive this is being in community, helping each other out. There was a time for almost a year where another artist friend of mine paid my rent.

And I had no idea how long she would be able to do that or whatever, but it certainly helped with the transition to leaving that corporate job. There were times when…I remember I had to buy some bread and all I had was nickels. I made a note to myself to remember that there's going to come a time where it's not going to be like this, that it hasn't always been like this, but this moment matters because this too is part of the sacrifice and the uncertainty of choosing this particular profession. There's highs and lows.”

Coincidentally, this week’s Scratch newsletter is a candid discussion about how the four of us are getting by financially as freelance writers. We talk numbers, money, time, motherhood, chronic pain, and relentless exhaustion. www.talkscratch.com/the-group-ch...
A quote from the linked newsletter where Latria says, “This is why I have 10+ things going at once, even though I try not to overcommit myself. Because if one check is late, there needs to be another check that can slip into that slot so that bills don't get behind. Once a late fee is tacked onto a bill, it's so much harder to come back from that ding. And even though I think we're supposed to be able to add late fees (because of that Freelance Isn't Free Law if the publication is in NYC) to some invoices, it's hard enough to get pubs to pay what they owe let alone ANYTHING ELSE. And me tacking on a late fee doesn't cover the 11+ individual late fees for all the things that needed paying (depends on the size of the check, but y'all know what l'm saying).
It feels like we're always on the losing side of this.”
