With great consistency, people who prefer authoritarianism to democracy envision themselves in charge. Could be them personally, could be vicarious, but they're always the boot, not the face. My local city clerk said she is having trouble hiring temporary poll workers. There is no local ICE threat but people read the news. Most of the poll workers tend to be retirees or stay at home parents so I understand their concern. It’s a problem that might need to be addressed more broadly.

I always drop my ballot at the box outside our city hall. I do it as soon as I can so that the city clerks office can compare my signature with my drivers license and get a bit ahead of the work. (They only begin tabulating results after polls close on Election Day.)
