Truthfully I've always seen GDC as something of gatekeeping event, i.e. you're "in the industry" if you pay over $500 and go to GDC. The literal gatekeeping of the garden doesn't surprise me.

for about 8-10 months i worked on this game, it was a card based roguelike where you were a wizard. for the life of me I could not get the mechanics where I wanted them and kept running into game design issues that ultimately I couldn't solve (basically kept the game from being fun).

I don't get extraction shooters. Let's just accelerate to the logical conclusion of "it raises the stakes to lose stuff you spent real world time gathering": if you die in the game a pneumatic tube in your gamer helmet rockets into your brain, killing you instantly
