At the Seattle Asian Art Museum, I laughed when I realized that I could actually read these very large scrolls! It was much harder to realize that up close, but upon backing up, it becomes clearer. 1/2
Two scrolls hanging side-by-side with characters that at first resemble Chinese calligraphy but are actually stylized English words. On the left, "Moving Forward In Time" and, smaller, "Xu Bing" (the artist's name).
On the right, "Learning From The Past" and, smaller, "For Seattle Art Museum".

Was just in the Chinatown-International District and had a coffee drink at Meiro (665 S King St). Fantastic! Also stopped at the Seattle Art Museum which is always a treat: from ancient to contemporary art; indigenous, international, local. Lots of cool stuff near there, too

From the book "The Final Forest: Big Trees, Forks, and the Pacific Northwest" by William Dietrich. (But I guess the mountain did do worse and faster)
There’s a story, possibly apocryphal, about President Jimmy Carter’s flight across the foothills of southwest Washington to view the devastation caused by the eruption of Mount St. Helens. Peering down at the shaven hills, the president expressed horror at the destruction below him. The state officials who were his guides had to gently explain that the helicopter had not reached the volcano blast area yet, that was Carter was seeing was clearcut logging.

Discovered that the @gettymuseum.bsky.social has a delightful online collection of images of daguerreotype plates with no images on them. Got me thinking about spectral responses of emulsions c. 1850 and what images to impose on those plates.... I love to sim old processes!
What appears to be a mid-nineteenth century daguerreotype of Big Ben, nearby buildings, a foreground iron fence, and just maybe something more contemporary in the background.

I like shadows on art museums. Geometric like yours (triangles on triangles!) or less so….

81 years ago today, Hitler killed himself. I love this photo of members of the Dutch resistance at the moment they heard early next morning, likely via the BBC, whose announcement I've integrated here. Gathered around a table with a radio, their elation is palpable. Fascism fell...may it always do.

How to slice low-moisture mozzarella thinly? Cheese plane & mandoline were fails (this cheese grabs those surfaces like a gecko). I've tried a wire slicer—works, but hard to get it nicely and consistently thin. The deli won't slice it. They know something? What's an amateur pizza maker to do?
The hands of my pizza hero, Brian Spangler, laying down low-moisture mozzarella on dough. Yes, sauce goes on top of that. So thin, so consistent. I'd love to have cheese like that

From NY Times reporting...WTF?! I thought this kind of gathering of top admin officials wasn't supposed to happen.
There was a heavy police presence outside the Washington Hilton, but no security screening required to enter the hotel. There were numerous pre-parties hosted on various floors of the hotel, as well as a red carpet.
In addition to the president, First Lady and Vice President, many members of the president's cabinet and senior staff were in attendance at the dinner. Among the attendees: Scott Bessent, the Treasury secretary; Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence; Sean Duffy, the transportation secretary; Karoline Leavitt, the press secretary; Steven Cheung, the White House communications director; and Kash Patel, the director of the F.B.I.

Seen at my local library
A sign apparently prohibiting the hugging of tree branches. Its cute cartoonish illustration features a rounded-branch, leafless tree, green grass below, and a classic stick figure clinging to one branch with arms and legs. The whole within a red circle with red slash diagonally through it. Pretty cute for a sign that discourages tree affection—or climbing

Wishing you hope, happiness, and resilience (and more) in 2026.
A card in landscape format made of textured paper. It has a decorative border composed of vines (whose stems are the electrical resistance symbol) and snowflakes made of crosses of Lorraine and whose centers are the symbol for the rebel alliance in Star Wars. The text says "Wishing you hope, happiness, and RESILIENCE in 2026" with another word faintly visible under "resilience".

AI audio project that I won’t get to: Use Trump’s voice for Die Hard’s Ellis (aka skeevy scheming coworker). It seems a good fit. Change no lines, just the voice. Oh, and Yippee Ki Yay to those who celebrate
Photo of a bearded businessman, clearly pleased with himself and thinking himself smarter than he is— which is not smart. In this photo he believes he is negotiating the release of himself and his coworkers who are being held hostage by terrorists. He has that face you just wanna hit. I will not disclose what actually happens to him in case you have not seen Die hard, the classic Christmas movie.
