I wrote this for @phenomenalworld.bsky.social on the politics of Peru's growth model in the wake of Fujimori's election. The "Peruvian Model" is praised for resilient macro stability amid political turmoil — but I focus on its downsides: how it blocks structural change and hollows out democracy.

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

Global Abortion Rights News @globalabortionnews.bsky.social · 24/03/2026
From 1965 to 1985, maternal mortality fell sharply across Europe. Romania was the exception, its rates increased by almost 150%. This was due to the President's political decision to ban abortion. When he was overthrown and executed in 1989, the abortion law was liberalized immediately.

Romania’s history offers a rare natural experiment on what happens when abortion laws change rapidly. What can the rest of the world learn from this?
