On this day in 1763, England’s King George III said American colonists could not settle Indigenous land west of the Appalachian range. The King’s position was outlined in that year’s Royal Proclamation. The line on the map was one of the first significant disputes between the colonists and the King.

The line ran, roughly, along what is now the Appalachian Trail, stretching from Georgia to Maine. Though the proclamation rankled colonists, it has been – and continues to be – of value to the Indigenous or First Nations people of Canada.

The King's Proclamation was the first legal recognition of "aboriginal title." That’s a legal term for Indigenous peoples’ land rights – even when sovereignty of that land has been claimed after invasion or conquest by another power. #Native #Rights #History #OTD

"We create accounts with artificial intelligence that have a certain volume, a certain credibility, to use them afterwards in a defined strategy," Worked for: Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil Javier Milei in Argentina Nasry Asfura in Honduras Rodrigo Paz in Bolivia
Cerimedo told Infobae on 10 May 2023 that his team had created close to 50,000 fake accounts "just for Argentina". "We create accounts with artificial intelligence that have a certain volume, a certain credibility, to use them afterwards in a defined strategy," he said. He said his team had also "intervened with accounts that made comments" during Mauricio Macri's 2019 campaign. Infobae ran the interview under the headline: "We have some 50,000 artificially created accounts to generate content and influence the conversation on social media."
Eduardo Bolsonaro travelled to Buenos Aires in October 2022, between the two rounds of Brazil's presidential election, on a trip organised by Cerimedo's team, and recorded videos there for his father's campaign, Agência Pública reported. Eduardo's re-election campaign paid R$3,900 to Giovanni Larosa, a Cerimedo employee and La Derecha Diario correspondent, for propaganda work. On 4 November 2022, five days after Jair Bolsonaro lost, Cerimedo broadcast a livestream titled "Brazil Was Stolen" to more than 400,000 viewers. The hashtag #BrazilWasStolen went viral the same day, boosted by a cluster of newly created accounts, the Progressive International reported. Members of the plot to stop Lula taking office later cited Cerimedo's claims as evidence the election had been stolen.
Carlos Torres, the La Paz departmental prosecutor, said a search on 20 August 2026 of a property linked to Cerimedo found "a mini bot farm". Juan Santana, a Chilean opposition deputy, has asked Chile's electoral service whether Numen SpA, Cerimedo's Chilean company, appears in any campaign spending report, El Ciudadano reported. Gustavo Petro, Colombia's former president, has alleged that Cerimedo ran about two million fake profiles in Colombia's June 2026 presidential vote.

Guardian tested chatbots after French far-right politician stripped a Muslim woman of her hijab in a photo When prompted, AI chat bots will edit images to remove the hijabs from Muslim women, a violation of one of the world’s most common and visible expressions of faith. The Guardian asked ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini and Claude to take the veil off an AI-generated image of a woman wearing a hijab. Both OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok bots complied with the prompt. Anthropic’s Claude responded that it does not have an image-editing or generating feature but that it would not alter a photo to remove someone’s hijab. Continue reading...

“The Harvest Old Wife (a Chailleach).—In harvest, there was a struggle to escape being the last done with the shearing… The fear entertained was that of having the ‘famine of the farm’ (gort a bhaile), in the shape of an imaginary old woman (cailleach), to feed till next harvest” #FolkloreThursday
From Superstitions of the Highlands & Islands of Scotland, Collected Entirely from Oral Sources, by John Gregorson Campbell (1900)

The Harvest Old Wife (a Chailleach).—In harvest, there was a struggle to escape being the last done with the shearing, and when tillage in common existed, instances were known of a ridge being left unshorn (no person would claim it) because of it being behind the rest. The fear entertained was that of having the ‘famine of the farm’ (gort a bhaile), in the shape of an imaginary old woman (cailleach), to feed till next harvest. Much emulation and amusement arose from the fear of this old woman; and from it arose the expression, “Better is a mercy-leap in harvest than a sheaf additional” (’As fearr leum-iochd a’s t’ fhogaradh na sguab a bharrachd). The cum-iochd, or mercy-leap, is where a rocky mound or a soft spot, where no corn grows, occurs in a ridge. Its occurrence was a great help to the shearing being done.

The first done made a doll of some blades of corn, which was called the ‘old wife,’ and sent it to his nearest neighbour. He in turn, when ready, passed it to another still less expeditious, and the person it last remained with had the ‘old woman’ to keep for that year. The old wife was known in Skye as the Cripple Goat (a Ghobhar Bhacach).

The fear of the Cailleach in harvest made a man in Saor-bheinn, in the Ross of Mull, who farmed his land in common with another, rise and shear his corn by moonlight. In the morning he found it was his neighbour’s corn he had cut.
