Lars Brinkhoff @larsbrinkhoff.bsky.social · 13/03/2026EINE code is available for an enterprising Lisp hacker to revive. It was the second Emacs ever. 100
Lars Brinkhoff @larsbrinkhoff.bsky.social · 19/01/2026If so, can you provide a description for the historical record? It's good to keep track of provenance rather than just plonk an unadorned zip file somewhere. (I have done that mistake, and regretted it later.) 100
Lars Brinkhoff @larsbrinkhoff.bsky.social · 19/01/2026Thank you! Is it ok if I make a copy and put it online with other LINC software? 110
Lars Brinkhoff @larsbrinkhoff.bsky.social · 12/01/2026Thank you. Yes, I'd say both listings are interesting. Even if one version of Spacewar is available, maybe another could have interesting differences. 100
Lars Brinkhoff @larsbrinkhoff.bsky.social · 22/11/2025I understand your concern. Are all the components available online in various places? Maybe I can make a script that pulls everything together. 000

Lars Brinkhoff @larsbrinkhoff.bsky.social · 22/10/2025I know it isn't, but I harbor a secret fantasy that the BESM-6 was a Soviet clone of the PDP-6. It would have been a sweet alternative reality. 100
Lars Brinkhoff @larsbrinkhoff.bsky.social · 14/10/2025DEC introduced sixels first with the VT220, later with graphics terminals like the VT340. This was around 20 years after the LINC. Arguably sixels only became cool a few years ago when people rediscovered them and added support to terminal emulators. 000

Lars Brinkhoff @larsbrinkhoff.bsky.social · 01/07/2025It was Devin Monnens. He's also in touch with Len Berger, the original programmer, and will interview him soon. I have opened a pull request for Open SIMH to add support for the display. The game code is also there, in the PDP8/test directory. github.com/open-simh/si... 010

Lars Brinkhoff @larsbrinkhoff.bsky.social · 28/06/2025Not quite. The IMLAC PDS-1 is a single-user minicomputer. A workstation predecessor before the term workstation was coined. (...or was it? I have seen it used with Englebart's NLS.) 020

Lars Brinkhoff @larsbrinkhoff.bsky.social · 27/06/2025The display code was written for the earliest "Alpha machine" model of the IMLAC PDS-1, for which no documentation or other code survives. Zachary Harper recently figured out how it works from reading the listing, and ported it to the standard "Graphics machine" model. 150

Lars Brinkhoff @larsbrinkhoff.bsky.social · 27/06/2025The Freeway Crossing game was written by Michael Irrgang in 1971, for the IMLAC PDS-1 computer. He made it for Earl Hunt, who was going to use it to measure reaction times in a psychology study. The game play is similar to the arcade game "Frogger" from 1981. 2225
