Big. Old. Trees. (with defects like peeling bark, holes, cracks, crevices). TAKE A LONG TIME TO DEVELOP. New paper out estimates that it takes a century for a good roost tree to develop in eastern forests. For western bats - that could be much longer. 🦇 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Tree roosts used by an endangered bat require almost a century to develop
As a forest-dependent species, the endangered Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) is reliant on large-diameter tree roosts (hereafter, “roosts”), which are u…

When checking PRFs in trees (Potentail Roost Features) always check ‘down’ as well as ‘up’. In England using an endoscope to look for bats requires a Natural England CL18 (level 2) protected species licence. @batconservation.bsky.social @arbassociation.bsky.social #battreehabitatkey #batsintrees

Why the Government’s latest move on nuclear is not a 'win-win approach' for species - If government proposals all go ahead, they will weaken legal protections for species and be counterproductive in meeting nature recovery targets. www.bats.org.uk/news/2026/03...

Why the Government’s latest move on nuclear is not a 'win-win approach' for species - News - Bat Conservation Trust
The Government has accepted proposals to change environmental rules for nuclear development. While low-carbon energy is important, these changes could weaken protections for bats and other species. We...

Bats in Trees. March is a great time to check PRFs (Potential Roost Features). Those in the photos likely animal damage, Deer and Grey Squirrel both like to chew the bark of sycamore . Yesterday we found 6 roosts with individual BLE, Natterers C.Pips species . #BTHK @batconservation.bsky.social

Brown Long Eared bat often found in relatively exposed places during the winter period. This guy was in a crack of this old stone quarry face. You can see the bat’s face and thumbs and tragus, the ears are folded back close to the body out of sight #BLE #BrownLongEar @batconservation.bsky.social

Natterers bat (Myotis nattereri) in torpor-a state of decreased physiological activity, usually marked by:reduced body temperature & metabolic rate. Torpor enables animals to survive periods of reduced food availability. Insect availability in winter is low so bats have evolved to hibernate.
