What’s coming, by descending order of annoyance: some bag colors are still wrong, rating a bag doesn’t feel satisfying at all, and I should probably add a live timer and temperature settings. Send me your grievances. The nice thing about a side project is that I’ll absolutely fix the colors first.

In build 9 (a serious app: it has build numbers) I simplified the TastePad, again, redesigned the New Bag flow, improved roasters’ colors, and added roast levels. If a roaster is missing, it’s either bad coffee or I forgot. Tap Feedback in the app and I’ll fix it at the next nap.

Just found the ideal side table to casually leave my perfectly aligned set of two coffee mugs and vintage magazines. www.standardequipment.ca/product/3075...
A minimalist gray cubic side table or storage unit with two small white cups on top and a small white incense holder. The cube has an open front with a shelf containing a magazine and a small book. The design features clean lines and a modern aesthetic with visible connection points at the corners.A row of five modular cube storage units in different colors: gray, white, orange, yellow, and blue. Each cube has the same minimalist design with open fronts and a shelf inside. The cubes are made of metal with visible edge detailing, showcasing a cohesive contemporary furniture collection.

Not really sure what happened in yesterday's episode of Severance, I was mostly focused on the Dieter Rams furniture.

Exactly. I’m hoping they’ll have a white or titanium version soon 😀

New Thermomix! Noise and UI responsiveness were the biggest issues, so that looks promising. A bit sad they got rid of the physical dial. I’m going to wait for other colors, this one is too sci-fi. www.vorwerk.com/gb/en/thermo...

Would 123 work for numbers? Feels natural next to ABC.

Fascinating read on how to design physical controls for cars. They're safer than touchscreens, more satisfying when done well, and budget brands already use them. Time to bring dials back!

As tax season approaches, a reminder that TurboTax comes with dark patterns and decades of lobbying against free tax filing. Consider alternatives like FreeTaxUSA instead.

This was my one glimpse of hope that Americans might finally not have to pay TurboTax for something that should be free and government-provided, just like it is in other countries.

Tesla sales plunged 63% in France in January. French people protest a lot, and usually for good reason.

I’d pay for a @figma.com feature that lets me refine a microcopy with AI, based on my app’s tone of voice, and good copywriting guidelines.

This icon weight mismatch in the new Gmail iOS app stresses me out a bit 😅

Seems like Garmin doesn’t test updates before deploying them to users. Also, a blue triangle, really? What about some guidance on how to fix the crash instead?

I thought Porsche started the full-width taillight trend (die Heckblende in German) with the 911 in the 70's. Turns out Dodge already had them in 1966.

Definitely makes sense to have better consistency on your machine 👍 How much effort did it take to get a good shot? Did you have a lot of experience?

From this article, it looks like they started with WALK and WAIT, but it's not clear why they switched to DONT WALK, though it is a more descriptive (and possibly safer) command. www.fhwa.dot.gov/infrastructu...

Yeah it could be less boxy for sure. There is something that I really like about this design though, it just feels a bit too faux-retro. Re: EV6, it looks great from the side! I do find the pinched front fascia a bit weird.

I could totally see a follow-up to the Ioniq 5 that would maintain the square headlights and overall shape while dropping the details that already feel dated.

Love the mix of usability and minimal aesthetic in this German coffee machine. The right way to make an interface without a touchscreen: satisfying physical dial, simple navigation, colorful icons.

One thing is clear after the Meta announcements: big tech's commitment to social justice only lasted as long as the PR benefits outweighed the political costs.

Out of moves? I think you're forgetting the upcoming Tesla Roadster with its 600-mile range, 0-60mph in 0.1 seconds, seating for 10, and anti-gravity hover mode that's definitely coming next year!

You think a thin long screen won’t help? The left and right edge of my digital cluster are hidden by the wheel and that’s annoying. Older Renaults like the Twingo had a thing digital speedometer and it wasn’t bad, although a bit close to the center probably.

Christophe Lamperti @lamperti.me · 07/01/2025
Now that’s the thread I was looking for! My assumption is that critical information like speed and navigation can live in a HUD, and *some* secondary info from digital clusters could move up there, but it’s a slippery slope and their prototype doesn’t show the necessary restraint at all.

This long screen close to the windshield is not a bad idea to bring key information closer to the driver’s eyes. I’m worried about the potential for visual clutter though. cc @casperkessels.com

Actually, if you increased the button sizes, reduced the status bar height slightly (if possible), and showed additional climate controls contextually (behind a button that would expand when you’re likely to need it), you would have more space to view your map, and browse music. Bad idea? 🤔
010
Christophe Lamperti @lamperti.me · 21/12/2024
Yeah you’re right. I wondered if keeping heated seats visible at all times on such a small screen made sense, but this could be frustrating. Looking at Polestar/Volvo, their infotainment feels easier to use just because it has bigger buttons and more spacing overall.
110
Christophe Lamperti @lamperti.me · 21/12/2024
Good point, and agreed. Also not sure all this info is needed at all times (e.g. status bar), and they could also have kept some physical controls for climate.

Tell us more! This is the UI of the new Renault 5. Contrast is definitely better, but the buttons look quite small, and the navigation feels heavy.

This infotainment UI for a French car gives me peak pre-iPhone vibes. If your goal is visual noise, the Christmas wrapping paper background is perfect – less so when you need to use the buttons while driving.
The infotainment UI for an upcoming French sedan (DS). The background wallpaper uses patterns that make the already crowded layout even harder to read.

Exclusive: Trump transition wants to scrap crash reporting requirement opposed by Tesla
The Trump transition team wants the incoming administration to drop a car-crash reporting requirement opposed by Elon Musk’s Tesla , according to a document seen by Reuters, a move that could cripple the government’s ability to investigate and regulate the safety of vehicles with automated-driving systems.
