Last year we found a bundle of London Illustrated News from 1855. So the news from 170 years ago was about the Crimean war, the commencement of Westminster bridge and a rumour in Paris about the Emperor’s brother…

Aged ash tree on the eastern flank of Birdoswald Roman Fort, known to the Romans who garrisoned it as Banna, "Place of the hunter", as the upper eschelons of the garrison, including the commanding officer, were keen on hunting.

We have "water levels" layer in our GPS mapping app. We've updated the popups and we've also updated our list of English gauging stations which has increased our total from 1,901 to 2,437 and as part of that we have removed some which were no longer operating. www.walklakes.co.uk/opus79692.html

I've now found two really good locations to summit camp on the ridge over Crinkle Crags. One on the first Crinkle of Flesk, and one a little further north from the fifth Crinkle on Shelter Crags. Can you spot the tent on Flesk viewed from the infamous "Bad Step"?

The best hike I've ever done, one I have wanted to do as long as I can remember. Finally took on the coast to coast in may/April 23. 11 days of walking, camping all the way, and threw up just outside Richmond - I'll blame Sunak for that.

One of my favourite views of Crinkle Crags, taken from Gladstone Knott and showing the 1st Crinkle on the left, and the scree gully of Mickle Door that divides the 2nd and 3rd Crinkle. Did you know that the first Crinkle was called "Flesk"? Sadly this name has been long forgotten. #lakedistrict

Over a year since its illegal felling, we're making sure the legacy of the Sycamore Gap tree lives on 🌳 When the Sycamore Gap tree was felled last September, we recovered 49 saplings from its roots as part of our 'Trees of Hope' initiative - one to represent each foot in height of the tree.

Always one of the finest views in the Lake District: the approach to Sharp Edge on Blencathra's eastern flank. Probably my favourite fell in the Lake District. Not visited much this year due to shooting other fells for a forthcoming book along with trips out to the Alps. Back here soon though!
